Spitfire No brainer Spit Question

When reading any of the helper books, they talk about a California model. Is that refering to any model that was shipped to North America. Thanks for clearing that up. Zer

For nearly as long as I have been alive, California has had stricter emissions standards than the rest of the country (now, most of the rest). A California model would be one made specifically to meet the California standards and would not be a reference to all N. Am. or even all U.S. cars.

Zer: Per my Haynes manual ALL North American Spits have the EGR and California cars also have a Cat converter. Unfortunately, the manual does not give any cut-in dates by year. My gut feeling is that this is all related to the 1500 series and the onset of the Stromberg carb, but that is only speculation. Bob

Well then here is another question then. If I read the book right then a 1975 Spitfire does not have a ERG valve, Or am I out to lunch. Zer

According to Moss, the '77 and newer Cal-Spit had an EGR. They also list a *different* EGR for the '77 and newer federal-standard Spit. Weird.
No mention or listing in Moss for EGR on a '75.

Zer,

Any car with a Stromberg carb should have an EGR valve. I believe but don't quote me on this that some of the later cars with twin SU's also had an ERG valve, though most would not.

Cheers,

In 1975, all cars in the US had cats. Some manufacturers had 49 state cars and a special one for Calif, others had 50 state cars. Manufacturers went back and forth themselves on that, so you might have either on a Spit. I cannot remember for sure, but seem to recall that in 1975 we in New Orleans imported 49 state models.
