Nissan cold "no drive" problem

I just bought a '01 Frontier with 200K and a weird trans problem. Truck has reverse but no forward gears in the "D" range when cold but will work fine in 2 or 1. If you turn the O/D of in D, it will engage but slip. Once it warms up D works fine. I think the valve body or part may be loose or warped. Gonna re torque the valve body and look for loose tubes. (The VB has a few external passages that use a pressed in steel tube.) I'm not changing the fluid as it's burnt and high mile. Gonnna save the juice and reuse.

Shoulda bought a Passat.

How old is the transmission fluid? My truck was getting lazy shifting until I changed the filter screen and fluid in the transmission. Hasn't done it since. PJ

My guess is 13 years. Problems can occur if you change fluid in a unit that wasn't maintained. It is quite possible that if I changed the fluid in this one it may never move again. It also has a screen filter, if it's clogged with debris to the point it has poor flow that means the trans is shot anyway.
