Next issue - seperation tank

I noticed a gas smell in the trunk and got to poking around and found a broken hose on the seperation tank in the trunk. The repair manual shows only two tubes on the separation tank, one from the engine and one going into the gas tank. My car has a third tube. This tube was dry rotted at the connection to the tank and I found it laying in the drop down area of the tank on the passenger side of the trunk. I'm guessing this tube is not used for anything, so I'm just planning on caping it unless I hear different.

Any opinions?

I would think about replacing the line! It is part of the Evaporative Loss Control system. I'm not sure if not having it would affect performance (my car is from a much earlier incarnation and has a very simple system!), but if gas is just evaporating out of the tank into the atmosphere, at the very least you are just wasting fuel!!
 
I guess I wasn't clear :smile: (seems to happen on a regular basis).

In the trunk on the passenger's side there is a vapor seperation tank. The repair manual shows two lines on the tank; one comming from the engine compartment and the other going into the gas tank.

In addition to these two lines, the seperation tank in my car has a <span style="font-weight: bold">third</span> line. There was a plastic hose connected to the thrid outlet that rotted and was laying in the trunk. Since this line is not in the manual and I have the lines in the manual, I do not know the purpose of the third line. It was clear that one end of the unconnected tube was originally connected to the third nipple on the seperation tank. However, I cannot see any indication of where the other end of the line goes. Since I have the two lines indicated in the manual properly connected, I'm thinking the third line doesn't have a purpose.
