Newb with a rare 1959 Datsun /Austin Daustin?

Hi guys! My name is Scott Fischer, and what I have here is a pretty rare 1959 Datsun 1000.

I have come here because this Datsun has an Austin heritage. Datsun/Nissan and Austin had a deal back in the 40's 50's to make A40's and A50's for the Japanese market. Toward the end of that Datsun made there own car, as far as I can tell this a unique design to Nissan, but copied much from the licensed Austin designs, and used lucas 'style' electronics.

Here is the '59. Only about 1000 were ever sold in the USA.

Look familiar? From my research it is a destroked (1000cc) BMC B-series 1500. Putting out a whopping 34-37hp.

This is the first Datsun model brought to the USA (Well there was a truck too.) I have a few questions I'd likt to ask y'all about it, but thought I should do an intro first.

Also I am an illustrator, and draw cars in my spare time. Here are a couple!

Anyway, glad to be here and hope to learn my pants off about b-series british engines!! (Really I am hoping things can swap!)

Welcome, Scott - good to have you aboard! And you've quite a project on your hands!

You'll want to get to know Cliff Cramp ("Sideache" on the forum), who is also an illustrator.

Thanks Mickey for the fast welcome! I am a moderator at my Datsun forum called www.ratsun.net, and I always like to give folks a hearty welcome there too!

I am curious where I should post questions about my engine? The Brits seemed to use the B-series 1500 and 1800 in a few things, what would be the best place to learn more?

Many thanks!

I'd post them both in the MG and the Other British Car forums. I'm sure you'll get lots of responses.

Welcome...I'd go to the Spridget Forum....that almost looks like a British Leyland A Series motor....I know there are things I go to the Nissan dealer to buy for my little engines when I can't find it through my usual sources.....neat little car also.

Welcome Scott!

I own a '58 Austin A35 saloon so I guess our cars are cousins.

My car (below) is being set up for the '10 vintage race season (I also race a vintage Sprite).

The engine in your car looks closely related to the Austin "A" series engine used in Sprites, Midgets, classic Minis and other small Brit BMC cars. But it might also be B series based....they look very similar.

Your car sort of reminds me of an A40 Farina.

Our Brit-built A series engine are mostly 948, 1098 and 1275 cc. Most of your questions and comments will probably fit well in the "Spridgets" or "Mini" areas of this forum. Or MG or Other Brits.

Thanks again for the warm welcome guys! This is looking like a swell place!

So I posted a thread about it in the 'Other British cars' section, but should I direct engine related questions to the Spridget section? Or will folks pretty much find questions in the 'other' section.

The windshild wiill be high on the list of things to replace too, and I'd bet it is right out of a british car.

Someone measured an A40 windshield and it was a little long. A mini windshield measures pretty close. But the other day I saw a picture or an Austin FX4 Taxi windshield, and that looked really close!!!

Lovin that A35!!!

Scott;
Nice rare auto and great illustrations.
can't wait to see that car as it progresses along the way.
Do you have a web site that showcases all of your illustrations??
Welcome aboard.

Thanks man! Here is a link to my Datsun art Gallery at my second home on Ratsun.net.

And here is a link to my official website! I largely work for the fantasy sci/fi genre. At the moment I am working for Disney on the Tron property, doing computer game character design. And I also have a few childrens books out there. But that is a way different style!

Appreciate the interest!

Hi Scott, and welcome to the forum. I'd try the Spridget forum for engine related questions. Good luck!!
