We're not Kiwis, but after spending our honeymoon there in Dec/Jan, we're making plans to move there -- it is paradise on earth. We spent a wonderful couple of days in Christchurch, and are heartbroken by the loss of life and the devastation.
My niece married a great young man from Christchurch this last summer. His family traveled here for the wedding in Madison, WI so Shirley and I met them. Really nice folks.
My new nephew's dad, his grandmother and at least one other relative had their homes completely destroyed. So far it seems his family are not injured but he does not know about his extended family and his many friends. A very worried young man.
He and my niece live in Chicago and 2 weeks before the wedding this summer their home was struck by lightening and nearly a total loss. They have been dealing with having it rebuilt. Great kids with great attitude. We are very proud of them.
The prayers from our family go with them in this catastrophic tragedy. I would imagine the recovery of the damage will be long, hard and costly. The loss of the loved ones will be much longer to recover from, if ever. How sad. PJ
By 'stuff' if you are asking are there more earthquakes in recent years than the past, the answer is an unqualified no. However people continue to do illogical things like rush and populate areas with known faults and past significant quakes. It seems more devastating , IMO, because we have so much population and wealth concentrated in these areas,so the losses are so much greater.
