General Tech new wiring harness woes

:frown: Hi all. I did some work last year when I needed transmission work including new downdraft Weber carb (had side-draft) and wiring harness.
My old wiring was cracked, dirty and piecemealed so I couldn't leave behind remnants to help put a new one in.
I got most wiring hooked up and started the car. I got the headlights, parking lights and emergency flasher working. Then the confusion began.
I'll start under the bonnet.
In the Haynes Manual wiring diagram, (fig 10.34) I have hooked up #83, starter solenoid relay. I believe if I have this I don't have #51, Ignition switch relay. Is that right? Also #83 wants a NW wire from the starter solenoid. I have a WN wire coming from the Starter Solenoid so used that. If there is no #51, where do I get power from to the fuse box terminal #5 to feed the green wires on the opposite side? I don't see any additional WN wires.

I wish I could help you prmac. I'm learning to rewire my 78 MGB and 79 Midget as we speak. I got some great 11x17 laminated wirign fiagrams from a guy off the internet. Not sure if that helps but I could get you the URL. It's great. I have a magentic white board in the garage it is posted to.

Hi Blackjokr, I did go and have my wiring diagram blown up and its helps a lot.
Hi Joe, I think this going to help. I'm still not sure if the White- resistor-white light green wire from the fuse box to the coil is in the harness or has to be made.
I'll get back, possibly not until Monday when I have delved into this again.
Thanks and happy motoring.

What I have found with other harnesses is that some of the wires, not bound into the harness, usually are not included and need to salvaged from the old wiring or made up new. You'd think everything would be provided but that's not always the case.

I got the lights and such to work but now, two days in a row I went out to my girl and found her battery dead. I tightened up the battery posts but suspect a short. Is there a way to narrow down my search?

I have a basic test light, just a bulb on a wire with an alligator clip. In those circumstances I start from the solenoid and see where the electricity is going. If you find a circuit that, with the key switched off, has power and shouldn't, then that's probably it. Make sure you have a decent wiring diagram so you can identify what should and shouldn't be live.
