TR2/3/3A New windshield needed.

Well I installed my convertible top to my almost completed 60 TR 3 project. Went out to the shop yesterday and noticed that the windshield is not cracked top to bottom. The top is a good fit but I happen to have an aluminum frame which I think did not have enough rigidity and after the top being on the car for a week it finally cracked. So now the issue is do I look for another frame or try a new glass in the aluminum frame. I thought the windshield was a little flexible so I measured how much the windshield moved when I installed the top and it moved back 5/8". What are your thoughts? I thought I was just about done but this is two steps backward! Where is the best place to find a new glass and is there anything I need to be aware of when I find one as in are some to thick/thin etc. Thanks for your help and have a good day!

That's about how much my standard frame flexes. Is there a chance the glass had a bare edge against the frame?

You should check your tenax studs along the top of the windshield to make sure they are not too long and contacting the glass. Putting tension on the studs by installing the top may have exposed the fact that the studs are touching the glass, causing the crack.

When I purchased a new windshield for my TR3A, which was sometime ago, the first thing I noticed after it came was that the glass was thinner then the original. I used black cloth tape in layers on the edge and sides of the glass until it was a good fit. Trimmed off the excess with a razor blade and have had no problems with the windshield. I pull my ragtop pretty tight when I install it. Like Dan said, check the tenax studs to make sure one isn't a little longer then the others.

As this is an aluminum frame, the tenax studs are different and don't thread into the frame. Rather they are more like a bolt that goes all the way through the frame so you can see them on both sides of the frame. That said it could still have contacted the glass. The crack at the top is about 5/8" away from a tenax and goes almost vertically down to where the rubber bumper behind the mirror is located. My concern is will this happen again because of the aluminum frame or maybe it had nothing to do with the frame. CJD said his standard frame flexes about that much so maybe I don't have a problem. The windshield was old but had no cracks in it. Thanks and have a good day!
