Hello my name is Justin, i live in tavistock ontario canada and own a 1949 mg-yt. it was my fathers who had passed away 9 years ago. Not sure what to do with it, sell it or race prep it, looking for advice or people interested in the car. engine runs smooth but the car needs bodywork and a full new interior. I was at mosport and saw the mg t series vintage racing... looks like alot of fun.

The Y-Type Saloons were used in Rallye racing in England in the early 50's with varying degrees of success. Being underpowered touring cars they were never very competitive except against similar machines. I suspect they were only used in this venue to promote the brand. As far as I know, YT models were never raced. Honestly if you want to get into vintage racing then I would sell the YT and buy a real sports car. The brother to the YT in the sports department would have been the MG TD. These can be had for similar value to a YT and are not difficult to improve upon for racing.

Hey Justin, welcome! you've come to a good place. (BTW I am up the road in Toronto)

I suspect the advice you are seeking is not advice we can really give until you know what you want.

Just googled your car - it's a gem! and very rare. My 2 cents says it probably not a good car to race-prep - Until you get to the T series, you don't really have the power to have anything competative - as well, parts get harder to find the older the car. Something like a YT is much more of a restore and drive kind of car. At that point though the real question is whether you want to. I know it was your dad's car but you can't inherit a hobby. Certainly if you are into it, restore and enjoy it! But, if it's not your thing (or even your style - you might really be into muscle cars) take lots of pictures, pass it on and keep the memories.

BTW here is a quick Google of what yours might be worth.
