let me introduce myself ...
I have a '71 TR6 Carb which I've owned since 1984. I bought it in Kentucky from a guy who had worked his way up through a succession of Sprites, Midgets, B's and then this TR6. His wife was a real estate agent and had found the proverbial E-Type in a barn. He needed money to work on the E-Type so I got this car for a pretty fair price. It was my daily driver for 3 years and I still drove it regularly through 1996.
Driving it in '96 on the freeway in Ft. Worth Texas, I pulled off and at the stop sign noticed the engine had a miss. On arriving at home, I ran a compression check and found that #3 was only showing about 35 PSI. I tried the oil trick and concluded that I had a valve hanging or a head gasket problem or a hole in the top of the piston. I borrowed a bore-scope from work and found a crack in the piston crown. I suspect that the bushings in the Distributor are worn and it's throwing a spark at #3 too early leading to catastrophic pre-ignition.
Being busy with a career and family and not a lot of extra cash, the car has sat now for about 13 years in the garage. I changed the oil, changed the coolant, Sea Foamed the cylinders and once a year, turn the engine over to ensure it's not frozen up. The lacquer paint is looking old, the chrome is starting to deteriorate but overall, it's complete and not a bad starting point for a frame-off restoration.
I'm 52 years old and live in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, USA. I've worked in the auto industry my entire life doing automotive HVAC Engineering ... but with the situation in the auto industry here I got caught up in a headcount reduction and find myself currently unemployed. Hope that doesn't last long. Ironic in a way, now that I would have the time, I definitely don't have the cash.
You probably won't find me a real active poster but I look forward to reading through these forums and learning from all of you. I'll contribute when I can offer good advice.
In the meantime, peace to all of you and good luck getting through these tough times.
Matt
