"new" steering rack for TR6 ? Anyone using one ?

So, after almost shattering my hand when my tie rod end separator broke today, trying to get the stuck tie rod end out of the lever arm on my old rack... I'm seriously contemplating a new rack, as it'd be cheaper than breaking more tools, and maybe bones as well. I see that the 'big three' carry them, both 'original' style and 'quick turn ratio' style.

Does anyone have experience with these? Are they good quality? Will they work with Good Part's aluminum steering rack mounts?

Thanks.

typed one handed as my other hand in a bucket of ice water and swollen from a deflected sledge hammer when the end broke on the tie rod separator. Thankfully it wasnt a direct blow or i'd probably be in the emergency room now. also, always wear safety glasses when using something like that! I'm thankful that I was.

I purchased the quick-rack for my 4A several years ago. I'm very happy with it, didn't seem to increase the steering effort, much smoother than my old, worn out rack.

I'm using a solid mount kit, but not the Goodparts kit, but everything appears to be the same size.

and wear leather gloves too, when beating on things with a hammer

Justin,

Ouch, you might try picking up a puller similar to the following.

I have one similar to this that always worked well except on one older RX7 where we had to use heat in order to get it to pop free.

Justin,

I had my rack rebuilt by TRF and have been very happy with it for the past three years.

I upgraded to the GP mounts as well as you want to do.

Cheers,

Been running the quick rack with solid alloy mounts on my '72 TR6 over 4 yrs O/D, modern tires & quick rack my top 3 preformance improvements. Visual quality beefer than factory rack. The ride may've been slightly rough in the beginning but what I gained in steering well worth it.

One full turn less, lock to lock, didn't realize how much work was put into tracking down the road though going straight minor adjustments needed 1/8 of turn here 1/8 there to correct play/slop in steering, quick rack that 1/8 is a lane change

Twisty road, quick rack 1/4 turn to the left back to center 1/4 to right without darn near 1/2 turn to accomplish same, don't 4get to include forementioned play/slop issues. On curves of PCHwy north of Cambria been told by other drivers they had hands full keeping up, my reply lots to do with not having to do as much corrective steering, as I'd driven that same road pre-quick rack and remember the workout

Parked: Grab my steering wheel the tires move with 1/8 turn or less others without almost no movement until 1/4 or more, via the alloy mounts you can make turn ratio stiffer which affords quicker response but more muscle to turn such as in parking

Contemplating purcashing another standard rack or having mine rebuilt opted for quick rack definitely upgrade to my TR6 handling/steering
