New Starter Blues

I bought a new Tilton Super Starter the other day and installed it only to find that it doesn't work. The starter gear engages but it doesn't spin. I tried it on the bench with the same results. Tilton has asked me to send it back so they can look at it and either send me a new one or fix mine. I thougt Tilton made great stuff. 0 for 0 so far.

I've been wanting to check my compression, so I installed the old factory starter. This one does spin, but it doesn't seem to have enough umph to really get the engine turning very quickly. I'm hoping it's just due to the higher compression. I really have no idea what else it could be since everything turns easily by hand with a socket attached to the crank pulley.

Um, Tab, normally you pull the plugs for a compression test. The starter should be coming up against compression only every other turn.

Might be that one of the brushes is hung up or something. It's a 4-pole unit, so it will try to run if 2 of the poles aren't working; just won't start the engine very well.

Also, check your ground strap, make sure it's making contact with bare metal, and tight.
