I picked up an '83 diesel vanagon. the engine was uprated to a 1.9l TD AAZ motor. gets at least 30 mpg and the rather large dog fits comfortably. The TD AAZ motor is rated about 75hp vs the original 50hp so you can cruise on the freeway about 60 comfortably.

Enjoy!
I love the idea of that type of mileage in a working van.

When we went looking for a new tow-van a few years ago, we really liked the Mercedes / Dodge Spinter diesel. A friend of mine was towing with one and getting about 26 mpg.
But the base price was too much (around $35,000).
We ended up with a new Chevy Express cargo van with V6. A decent van and almost $15,000 less than the Dodge.

By the way, I have a friend who has a Vanagon like your's with a VR6 swap. I rode in it a few weeks ago. Quick!
