New respect for vertigo

Thursday at work, around 2:30 or so, I started to feel a bit light headed. Not a normal feeling for me, but not particularly worrying. Been working hard these last few weeks, and a little added stress can do things to a person. Tried lying down, tried the old head-between-the-knees, but nothing seemed to help.

A coworker called my wife (we commute together, she works one building over) and she came and got me. We're now 25 minutes or so after this all started, and I can't really stand on my own, balance is gone, and any motion upsets the old tummy. We decided the local health clinic was a better choice than home. Good thing. Turns out I was having an acute attack of vertigo. Doc got me on a bed, did a few basic tests (follow her finger with my eyes, try to sit up) and after I lost all I had eaten that day, I was still feeling not-right.

So in comes the IV (a first for me), and Valium of all things. It's quite helpful for vertigo I learned. I also now can't for the life of me understand how folks get addicted to that stuff. It really knocked me for a loop! Sucked all the life out of me, but the spinning feeling did stop.

Feeling much better today, but I now have a real appreciation for the folks who suffer from this regularly. Mine was probably caused by a virus and should completely clear up in a day or 2. Quite the exciting evening!

I just went throught this with my wife and she still has a little bit of it from time to time.

It was about two months ago. She was in really bad shape and I had to run her over to the hospital. Instant IV and a barrage of tests. We where there for about 5-6 hours getting scoped out. I'd heard of vertigo but did not know much about it. Now I've heard of it several times. Weird how it started popping up all of a sudden in people.

As I said she is much better but still gets little bits of it.

Not really sure what the cause was, Doc. The doc at the clinic said it was probably caused by a virus of some sort. Don't really know, as I was feeling just fine up until the moment when I wasn't. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

No fun...hope you have a speedy recovery.

I have had a history of ear problems, but I've never had any vertigo problems (but I still won't fly the old taildragger if I have an ear ache).

Last year, I was surprised to find out that this was what was wrong with my cat. Apparently, when cats get older, this is pretty common (he made it past 21....he's in Kitty Heaven now). Same cure for cats....Valium.

Luckily, I've felt good enough today to be able to forgo the medication. I hope to never have to go that Valium route again. I realize it was IV, so faster acting, but it was still just a small dose. Yikes.

Been a nice quiet day here. Took a nap, did a bit of critical work for the day job, mostly just rested. Feeling about 85% or so, on the mend but still taking it easy.

My Uncle has been experiencing vertigo for a long time. My relatives closest to him say he's getting better, and when I visited them this past Thanksgiving he seemed good to go. I have a couple of co-workers that experience vertigo every now and then, and have seen that it can really take the pep out of a person.

I know what you mean. The doc gave me some
kind of narcotic cough medicine and I could
only stand to take it once. Put me out for
almost 14 hours.

How can folks shoot that stuff in their bodies,
is beyond me.

Couple of days of rest, and I'm feeling much better. Hoping it was just an isolated incident--we'll keep an eye on it, but I think I'm going to live.

Even puttered in the garage for a while, put the seats back in Tunebug and cleaned up a bit. Not too strenuous, just some nice easy work.

Yeah, Dale: even the "NyQuil" stuff had me dopey for hours in the AM after the first go. Never gonna touch that goop again.

Wow Drew...hope you get better soon. I have really been hit hard this year with the Pollen thing. Itchy eyes, stuffy nose the works..(my mom claims its from driving around with the top down) Anyway, took a benadryl last night and went down for the count. I fell out on the couch and don't remember hubby even taking me upstairs to bed. That stuff was scary. Anyway, rest up, sleep some and we look forward to hearing from you soon!

Me either. I had the snip a few months ago and they offered me a couple in advance. Uh, no thanks, I'm good.

Although I did have a morphine pump after a skiing injury/surgery/"unhappy triad". Now THAT was some feeling. Got pain? click..click..click...
