I am swithing from steel wheels to 48 spoke painted wires. I bought new 165X15 tires and want to have them mounted. Question - What is the best way to make these wire wheels air tight or do I need to use tubes. Thanks! Paul

Yes Paul, you will require tubes and Rim Bands.---Keoke

In place of rim bands, I've used duct tape and it's worked great for the last 3 years.

Dayton has tubeless wire wheels available . They seal the spoke/wheel juncture and have a lip on the wheel for tubeless tire application. Just don't ever adjust the spokes
;-)

If these are used 48 spoke wheels you are wasting time and money even thinking about putting them on a car.I hate to rain on the parade , but these things were borderline when new,95% of the 48's you see these days have serious safety
defects. IMHO , get the 60 spoke daytons or stay solid till you can.

MD has a valid point. Forty eight spoke wheels were used up to the first TR4 models and then were found to not be strong enough for the additional weight of the TR4. Sixty spokes are much stronger and seventy two spoke wires stronger still.

Allen Hendrix of Hendrix Wire Wheel once told me that the useable life of a wire wheel was about 100,000 miles before the splines became too worn to be safe.

If you get new wheels, like said before the 72's are the safest bet. Allen also recommended using tubes even for the new Daytons.
