Just recieved a new to me carb! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Thanks Doc. Needs a good cleaning and I'll try it out on the MGB /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif Interesting choke mechanism. I pushed the piston up and sounds like there's some of that florida sand in there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Of course it stayed up. Oh well... I'm gonna have fun with this one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Puh-lease... That bread-tie is an indication of fine craftmanship and care.... Just man-up and bolt her on! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Is there a grease of some sort that you should add to the groove that this piston rides up & down in or is it metal to metal?
I would think that a shot of lithium or somthing should be used but you don't want it to cake up over time.

What does everyone use?

very close tolerance metal to metal. No grease. And don't go crazy sanding them either. If it is sticking you've got a cleanliness problem or a "ovaled" dashpot, mis-aligned needle, bent damper rod, etc etc etc. Grease is not necessary. On a good working one you'll get a very satisfying "clink" when you push it up all the way and then let it drop.

There's some crud in there... I could feel and hear the cruching of dry crud when I lifted it with my finger... and it stayed up (I only went about halfway)... I think it gets lubed by the dashpot oil.

Weird thing though is there are 2 fuel nipples on the float chamber... I'll need to take it all aparts and clean it up good... something for tonight when Julie's on the computer /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

*refrains from making comments about the float chamber*

Oh, well... I couldn't wait to play with my new toy... so I took it apart and cleaned it all up - Wow /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif what a simple carb! piston now works very nicely. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

...and it's a little prettier too...

Does anyone have a closeup of how the little damper piston is supposed to be assembled on the shaft? Mine is very hard to insert after I put oil in there.

Yes, will be tight as you push down and oil leaks past the plunger, but should not be a big deal. If so the bypass is pluged, dirt.

Nope! I scrubbed it and cleaned it out a bit. It has all the bits and just needs a good rebuild. The damper SHOULD be hard to put in with oil: that's its job... If not, it's shot. the second outlet is because it's the "first" in a pair and the "twin" is supplied from the other tube... Rob has its "twin."

That dirt is Genuine Florida Dirt! AKA: SAND. Chaos and Mayhem PTY., LTD. are pleased to supply your gritty needs /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Sorry 'bout that. I scrubbed the crud off'n it and partially disassembled to insure it was "all there." The carb bits, not the grit. I didn't notice it'd been "contaminated."

The damper is assembled correctly, BTW.

That bread tie was to keep the throttle plate from harm in "passage"... he also got some sections of pool noodle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Lime green! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

saweet! I still got my sliced up noodle aroud here somewhere!

as for the plunger:

I've not deployed mine yet... waiting to see if I hafta go visit a butt sniffer this year. Plus, mine needs rebuild. The jet tube at the bottom was a little on the brittle side... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
