new mixture attempt

Here's a photo of my No.4 spark plug with
about 250 to 300 miles driven on it.
I pulled it to see if I am getting any closer
on my air/fuel mixture attempts.

My Timing is set 10* advance

Yes, I know it's bad to pull the plugs and reuse
them. I toss them after the 2nd pull and install
new ones.

Carbs are balanced- Am I lean, rich or ok?

thanks,

d

Close hood, drive car for 700 more miles as we originally planned.

ROTFL @ angelfi.

For heaven's sake dale, 300 miles the plugs haven't even warmed up yet.

It looks fine, from an A&P mechanic that's been reading plugs for 26 years.

Actually it's a buck and a quarter quarter staff, but don't tell him that.

<span style="color: #990000">Back on point: I am gearing up to attempt a
200 mile r/t marathon in the Crypt Car, without a breakdown.
That would be a fantastic record for this car. I am building my
spare parts stash and traveling tool kit.

I don't want a breakdown because my mixture is no good.
So, once again:

are my carb's mixture lean, rich or OK.

thanks,

d</span>

You're def not rich and they do not look like anything like overheating/knock is taking place so I'd say you aren't too lean either.
If you have solid top end then your not too lean (also doesn't knock/ping at low revs under load in 4th), if you are snappy on take offs you're not too rich
It may not be perfect but I'd agree with the gang and drive it. You're not going to cause any harm the way that looks.
It's dif to read plugs as in the old leaded days but you still need to run at load/speed and cut the engine-coast roadside to see what's happening while driving. Prolonged idle will tell you how the car is running at idle

Look good to me Dale, but where did you ever hear that plugs should be discarded after 1 or 2 pulls? I could see maybe making a case for plug gasket repacement after a few pulls. Maybe. No reason at all to discard good functional plugs.

Tom

Discard after two removals?

Oooh, ooh, send em to me. I'll go find if Champion or Motorcraft(Autolite) still sells the spark plug washers. Used to buy them by the box, for the race cars.

Dale, if you throw those plugs away after two removals you are WASTING money.... Think of how many cervezas those plug replacements are costing you....

<span style="color: #990000">I think I've only used 10 to 12 sets of plugs during
the entire 2000 miles the car has been functional in the past 3 years.

It has only been very recently that I was informed blackend plugs
do not need immediate replacement.

<picking up Police issue megaphone>
This is the Repair Police! Put the tools DOWN, close the hood, and step SLOWLY away from the car! Now open the driver's door and park your backside in the seat, close the door, fire it up and don't come back until you have gone through 3 tanks of gas!!

Peter;

That seems to me to be too light a sentence.
Of course, any more time, and he may come back sunburnt.
Pass sentence and send him on his way.

As they say Dale, HAPPY MOTORING!

Dave

I change my Champion N9Ys once a year wether I need to or not. I take one old plug & put it in my Honda lawn mower, which uses the same plug. probably because I'm a CABCO

Colin

spark plugs are good for a MINIMUM of 12000 miles.

That is the first time you should even pull them out and look at them....

Modern plugs, with electronic ignition and controlled fuel systems are good for 60,000 or more miles. You will see some SLIGHT degradation in performance up around 48K or so miles, but degradation is so gradual and minimal that most people are not even aware of it.

Oh for the days of the ol' Blue Crown Spark Plugs where we could replace the parts....

Ok, I guess it's official! Dale feels picked on - he's passed the initiation! He's now one of US!!! Yay Dale!!

Now go drive Amos!! :driving:

There's nothing wrong with checking your carb mixture. Do it 3 times a day if it helps you feel better. It's sooo easy even a cave man can do it.
I just wouldn't do it by removing the spark plugs.
