My 2003 Cooper S at this time is delivering 26.3 in moderate in town cruising. Highway as in I-64 in Illinois from Benton to St. Louis I averaged 29.3 at 80 mph. My average mph is 39.2 per 300 miles and average 27.6mpg. On a SCCA Road Rally, hour to and from, three hours on run I average 28.6mpg. This will not reflect a non-S model which should get more and I do have a rather heavy foot.

That's pretty respectible considering the HP of the S.
I have a 2002 S and I usually do 28 driving back and forth to work which is a mix of highway, town and traffic jams. On the highway, I get about 33 mpg at 80 MPH with the air on. I have got better at a slower speed but I cannot keep my foot out of the throttle.<hr></blockquote>

I think some of my upgrades may have affected my mpgs. Or my all weather tires, the most I've seen on the computer was 32. I'll see in three weeks when we take it to drivers school for a whole day at Gateway.

I don't know about gas mileage but I just drove a Cooper S - whoooooooooohooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
not really up on them but this was a 6-speed, turbo-ed car??? Big sunroof...lady teacher pulled up at opening day of school in it...her hubby gave it to her as a gift (yeah, right! He just wanted one!) whooooooooooooooooooohooooooooo!!!

The Cooper S motor is boosted by a direct drive positive displacement supercharger. I believe (somebody please correct me if I’m wrong) it is an Eaton unit.

PC...you're probably correct (turbo-ed vs supercharged)...as I said in my original post - I don't know anything about them except what a hoot to drive! Man, it was fun!

It’s definitely a direct drive supercharger. I just wasn’t positive that Eaton makes it. The normally aspirated Cooper is a blast to drive too.
