New MG purchase

Well, I sold my old GT before going to law school and stripped it of some key parts more for sentiment than later use as I thought I would never have the chance to buy another one. It just seemed to me the values were getting a little too high, and for the money I figured I'd pick up a Porsche 951 instead.

Twice my quest for more speed was foiled. First during school as I saved for that 944 an opportunity came along to buy an 84 Mercedes turbo diesel with all records, window sticker and a great condition overall at a good price from a family friend. The most reasonable, wise, sensible automotive decision I ever made, but also BORING!!!!(not to mention a little, well, stodgy).

So, save again I did, made an offer on a 944S and seller didn't take it. Lucky for me looking back. Time goes by and I'm screwing around on ebay looking at 944's, and I check out MG's for old time sake. I see a 71 GT for sale in the Wichita, KS area. Same color as my old one! Price seems a little low, pictures look good. I bid on it and become the highest bidder. I had to go to work with 8 or so hours left on it and figured I'd lose, but I end up winning. I never even asked a question about the car.

A friend drives me to Wichita (about 3 hours a way) and we find the seller's house. When I saw it I knew it would be fine, it was just about perfect. Turns out it was repainted about 3 years ago, the engine bay was crazy clean, had decals and everything, interior was complete with a new Autumn leaf interior kit, has a decent radio/cassette player, I couldn't believe it. I figured I'd better pay the seller, a wonderful lady who had an MGA and replaced it with the 'B-GT, but couldn't keep up with two cars anymore, and get out of there before she started to change her mind!

The car performed wonderfully all the way home, which was a little scary driving in the middle of flat nowhere in a 34 year old car bought sight unseen, with no one around and often no cel phone service should anything have gone wrong.

At any rate, I'm back and very happy about it. I forgot how much fun these cars are to drive. My friends all drive Mustangs and WRX's, even some with Boxsters and 911's and they're like this thing really hauls! I think its so funny. Hey, where is the air conditioning? Yeah, whatever.

Anyway, it does runa little hot, like right between N and H, and my new MG mechanic guy says this is still normal. I changed the thermostat and the sender unit and its still hot, just not as much. I drove my old GT all over the states and lived in New Orleans for a while. I just removed the thermostat alltogether, but both my old ones always rans just left of N, you know the spot, no matter what, unless something was wrong. So, maybe the timing or mixture is off, we'll see. The timing feels good so maybe its just the mixture.

Oh well, glad to find a forum. Sorry the post is so long but I wanted to tell my little story. Maybe some of you all saw the car on ebay, a white 71 GT just recently. It really is nice and frankly was undersold. I do want to find an OD trans, though. I've never had one before and used to run my old GT at 4-4.2K on the highway for long stretches no problem, but I don't want to stress this one out. I'm a little more grown up now, have a garage and would like to keep this car in great shape into the future.

Thanks for the forum!

Matt,

Congrats on your new B! Yes, they are alot of fun. I think you'll find that most people are more interested in talking to you about your MG than a Porsche. It's just more approachable!

I would try backflushing the coolant system for starts. A B coolant system works fine if it's properly sorted out. Yes, it might be the timing too or a combination of both. Don't run without a t-stat. The system needs it to slow down the flow of water or the water won't have time to shed it's heat in the radiator.

Good luck with your new GT!

PS- Bah! Who needs AC!

Confratulations, Matt.
What a great story, sounds like you were very fortunate!
Enjoy the forum, and post a picture in the gallery so we can all see your new car.
Simon.

Congrats, Matt-- good story and a bit of good fortune for you. Maybe we'll see each other running around the city or at the all british show in KC.

Pete

Hey, nice TR. I will be at the car show on Sunday I think. It is Sat and Sun. if I remember right. I'll try to track you down!

Congratulations on the find. I know you will have a lot of fun with it. You might look into something else as well as the backflush. Check out the voltage stabilizer under the dash. It should regulate the voltage to the temp and gas gauges to 10 volts. There is a mod for a solid state replacement. Can't remember where at the moment but a search of this site should produce it. I will look and get back later.
Bob

Great Story. I had a similar story last August. I bought my car sight unseen and drove it from Cincinatti, OH to Annapolis, MD. Car ran great and I had a great time. Sounds like you did too. Have fun!
