New Member. Oil Leak question

Hello,

My name is Rich.

I purchased a 1980 MGB a couple of weeks ago from a serious
hobbyist. It's my first MG - I'm 42. I have always admired the car. I have little mechanical skills but I like to figure stuff out myself before running to the mechanic. After a recent run of some 40 miles I noticed some smoke from the engine. It turned out to be a little oil leaking from the carburetor onto the exhaust pipes. The carburetor is Webber 32-36 downdraft.
I found some oil in the air filter. I cleaned it up, ran it for ten minute and it seems to have stopped.
Does anyone have any ideas on what happened ?

Is it a K&N air filter? If so, its possible that it could have been overoiled by the previous owner.

What color and how thick was the oil?
