New K&N filters on my SU's -are they ready to run?

So I got the new K&N RU-4410 filters today and put them on and drove a bit.

Do these things come pre-oiled? No oil came with them so I assume they are ready to use out of the box.

These are my first K&N filters, so I apologize for the newbie question. Pics in a minute /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Rick, yes, they are ready to use out of the box. I'd recommend you get one of their "recharge" kits, consisting of cleaner and oil, for later on down the road.

Is there a K&N filer that fits in the stock canister on a B?

Here are those pics, also - where are those little open brass connections supposed to connect?

Thanks Jeff, good to know!
Kit is pretty cheap too, so I'll pick one up for later.

Rick, if you are refering the floatbowl vents in the photo, they should be tied together and back to one of the small nipples on the charcoal cannister. There is metal pipe that connects them (w/sections of hose as couplings) to each other and has a tee to connect to a line that goes to the cannister.

It also has a little tab on it that screws to the little bracket on the rear SU filter can.

I can get picture if you need one.

Re: New K&N filters on my SU's -are they ready to

Rick, if you're no longer running the canister, you can just either run a hose from each vent down below the carbs, or run a short hose to a piece of tubing, and down. The main thing is to get any possible overflow away from the exhaust manifold and header pipe.

Aha - no cannister is here! That explains it, Thanks!!

I dont think so. I've never seen them advertised and I've never heard anyone say they do. I use the stock ones I get from Moss and I think they work very well. But, that's JMHO. PJ

That's what I planned on doing but I hear there are decent power gains from using the K&N. Every little bit counts.

Re: New K&N filters on my SU's -are they ready to

The K&N RU-4410 are something we've used on the race cars for years with the factory MGB filter bases, The rubber sleeve on the K&Ns are 3.5" which is a perfect fit over the filet bases. I did it to my car a few years ago and showed it and how I did it on the MGBEX forum, and it looks like it's has kinda caught on. It's a neat set up, which has no fastners passing thru the air filters like most of the other filter set up, so get nice undisturbed flow from it, and removing them is as easy lossening the clamp, which comes with the filters. More than one vendor has called me about this, about selling them, but there's no real money to be made, all you do is counter sink the two mounting holes for allen head machince bolt for a flush fit, or use two button head allen bolts if you don't have a drill press and counterbore tool. It's a clean, good flowing set up that is user friendly. here's phots of my car with it. A added bonus is they give the carbs a real throaty sound as well when you stick your foot in the gas.

The last picture is where I actually port matched the carb throat and filter base

Re: New K&N filters on my SU's -are they ready to

Here's some pics of a recent set of HS4 carbs I did for a vintage race MGB, port matched the filter, radiused the piston for better mid throttle flow, thinned the throttle shaft, ported the intake. This was for a race car, and with the race headers you couldn't use the stock heat shiled, so he wrpped his headers, and I had to custom make the return spring holer that would clear the center header tube, and make a throttle cable retainer. This carbs are not thru-bored, so other than losing the custom spring holder and throttle retainer using a stock heatshield, they are 100% streetable. In fact this customer is now having me build a more serious motor for his race car and we're going to use twin HS6s and these carbs are going on his father's street MGB.

What's on the float bowls? Did you wrap those in a heat shield/insulating material?

Re: New K&N filters on my SU's -are they ready to

Thanks. I saved it to my favorites. I have to weigh the benefits/performance increase to cost ratio.
