Switched to a competitor to cut $50/month off the cable bill. Got a whizz-bang modem and when I asked for the username and password for the management GUI, was told by the cable rat I couldn't have it, that the Company was the only one allowed in there... I don't want a WiFi signal being broadcast from the thing, told 'em that. "Call Tech Support" was the answer they gave me, and this AFTER they'd CHOPPED my fiber line up to string their cable to th' hovel. Amateur hour or company rivalry? I had ~politely~ asked them to not do that.

Well, I hacked the thing and set it up to be a pass-through DUMB modem. Most of these devices are running a Linux kernel, no service provider I PAY is gonna dictate how much of MY STUFF they get to see and/or access. Now they can only bump their noses into my firewall machine. Arrogant bastages! :smirk:

Unhappy with the tech guy's installation? But - you're saving $50 a month!

(Aren't most commercial modems and routers set to use a manufacturer default login and password? You go to the MFR's website, find the model, and voila! Login and password - so you can change it to whatever!)

I had to sit on the last one to keep original install intact for possible future use..and same BS about no router access.

For about three months if it is anything like here.

Cable company arbitrarily raised my already too high rate about $7 last month. Last straw I said. Went to a local outlet store and said I need to reduce my bill. Nice lady said she could fix that. About 5 minutes later it was magically $50 cheaper. She said come back next year and we can fix it again. Said she just applied a discount that I qualified for. I'm pretty sure she just gave me the discount they offer to switch users from other services. Like JP said, for about 3 months. The whole thing is a giant ripoff.

Old joke: Ever notice there's more than one wire from your house to the pole? They're charging you for the signal, but taking it back again after you use it.

Ba-dum bump.

Ah, yes - remember the days when there were only a few stations, the TV signals were free, commercials didn't take 30% of the time slot, and most shows were enjoyable.

I still watch Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffith on Netflix. Don't watch any of the new "stuff".

Have you seen Game of Thrones or West World?

We don't have cable yet, supposed to put it down our road, I guess within the next 10 years! :highly_amused:. We have Dish Network with around 300 channels, we watch about 4 of them , as the rest are mostly junk or unfit for most eyes. But we pay dearly every month for the privileges :encouragement:. PJ

We ditched cable about two years ago - fortunately (!) living in Toronto you can point an antenna at the CN Tower and get about a dozen digital stations - all we need for news etc, and then Netflix and Plex (Like apple TV) and we are pretty much good to go - we rarely even use the DVD player.

That said, and, continuing back to the origin of this thread - it was amazing how quickly the cable bill (Phone and interweb and cell phones) crept back up to cable TV rates! FWIW Canadians consistently pay more for interweb and cell service than any of the other G7 countries - can you spell Oligopoly? :madder:
