We make plans ... the gods just laugh.

"The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft agley, And leave us nought but grief and pain for promised joy" -- Robert Burns, Scottish poet

Note well that Heathrow is *not* in Scotland.

Actually if you want a laugh, read the story about how they were planning on implementing fingerprint access control - all in the name of aiding BAA's profits...

Looks worse to navigate than Charles DeGaulle in Paris.

The first time I went through there it took me 45 minutes to find the commuter rail station. Signs were in French. Excellent.

At least we may read the signs in Heathrow . . .

The baggage conveyor belts were probably powered by Lucas, so what was the big surprise when the broke down?

Something you might notice in one of the BBC site's videos: as the BA spokesman is trying to put the best spin possible on the miserable situation, you see guys on ladders in the background, trying to get even the big electronic arrival/departure signs to work.

What a PR nightmare. One reason given for the problems is that before the terminal staff arrived for work on that first day, the parking lot roads had been re-routed, and the staff were late arriving at their stations. Then as baggage started coming through the system, there weren't enough people to pull the bags off the conveyors, causing domino effect pile-ups.

I guess it's not exactly easy to "pre-test" a new system which sorts (or is supposed to sort) 12,000 bags an hour!

Aye, and its been suggested that a disproportioate number of the new terminal's flights destined for Scotland have been affected by cancellations....

Oh, well... I've always thought it easier (and sometimes faster) to drive to London than to fly or take the train there....

There is a new terminal in Beijing, built to handle Olympic travellers and future needs, which is much bigger, 245 acres of floor space, more than all 5 Heathrow terminal put together.

Perhaps it will run more efficiently, but if not....
Simon.

tr6oldtimer, and the additional inconvenience of having to carry heavy luggage around, in, over, all the oil leaks on the ground. :jester:

Last time I was in Heathrow, The wife and I spent the night in the terminal in a snow storm. Thing is, we weren't waiting for a flight, we were waiting for a pre paid rental car! Didn't get it until 9 AM the next morning. The rewards came later when we drove north and saw the British country side snow covered. Absolutely Beautiful!
