GT6 new gt6 starter fit

Hi all,
I just recieved my new starter for the gt6 and upon getting ready to install I noticed that the circle flange that fits the bellhousing is smaller than the original. On the sale slip it says it fits MGA_Spitfire-Midget-GT6. Is this a one size fits all, or the wrong starter. Of course the parts place is not open today to ask. Anybody know if this is right or wrong.
The bolt holes line up and everything else measures the same, but the circle flange is not even close to the original.
Thanks
Joe

Upon taking the calipers to the old and new, it looks like the wrong bellhousing flange was bolted to the right starter body.

Did you buy it at a auto parts store.or a specialty store?

gt6? not many of us around, what do you have?

i'd help with the starter, but i've never installed one and won't be installing mine for months. it sounds like you got an original starter, remanufactured or new?

the plates (if we are thinking the same thing) set the distance the gear needs to be to engage the flywheel. if you can, i'd reuse what you had on the old starter. depending on the quality of the new starter, that should be fine.

but for some real knowledge, wait for a spit or gt6 owner to chime in...

Did you have the spacer that the original starter used? Meanwhile, you are correct that there are different sizes of "flange"; it is also correct that this starter does also fit a host of other cars, including all the "SC" Triumphs back to the Standard 8 and through the last Spitfires, as well as many MGs and other cars.

I just happen to have a GT6 starter and spacer plate in my hot little grubby. The plate measures .410" thick. The outside step is 3.860" diameter, and the rim on the starter is 3.490". The corresponding undercut in the ID of the spacer is 3.505".
Hope that helps a bit.

Hi all,
The starter is new from Obsolete Automotive(Indian origin I think). After checking the measurements, it is the same starter body as the original, but looks like the flange that fits the bell is the difference. I do not know if the old flange from the Lucas original will fit the new or not. The bolt pattern is the same. I think that I will call the supplier tomorrow and get the proper starter sent out, since it is thier screw up. The pain is I had this one Express shipped accross country to get the car running to drive to the rust proofers tomorrow.

Flinkly, the car is a 1970 GT6+. I did a body off restoration that took about six years, good thing this is a hobby! I have had the car back on the road for two years now and am enjoying between fixes. I just installed a pertronic electronic ignition and an electronic rust inhibitor. The paint and body were the most expensive parts of the restoration, so I want to have them last as long as possible. Interesting PDF on spedometers you posted, My spedo died the other night on the way home, the info could be usefull once I get to checking out what's wrong.

Thanks all
Joe
