new engine woes

ok, here's my latest rant. I finished my engine swap - put the 1275 in and got everything hooked up. This engine was rebuilt some time ago, so i primed the oil pump and put a little in each cylinder, filled her up with motor oil and coolant. then i set the timing (took me a while). then poof, my back gives out. i sit on the project a few days to allow myself to heal. then today i hit it hard. after everything was double checked, i noticed a fuel leak in one of the old rubber hoses, so it was quickly replaced. now i wanted to get that sucker started.

cranked it over and vroom it started up. there was a little smoke but i figured that's from when i squirted the cylinders. Also, i was expecting a little strange smells/noises from the new rebuild.

i let the engine run and warm up by fooling with the choke, and i had to fiddle with it a little bit to keep it running. then i looked back and saw a cloud of smoke. it seemed that when i gave it some gas, or over choked it smoke poured out.

this went on for quite a while until i saw what looked like black burnt oil coming from my tailpipe.

now since i set the timing statically and 'eye-balled it' to get it running, i know the timing is at least a little bit off. the carbs need to be tuned, and i just filled them up with dashpot oil. what do you guys think is going on? if i left anything out you could use to help me diagnose the problem, let me know.

Mike, how long did this engine set? (long time)? I think you may have one or two stuck rings, not what you wanted to hear I'm sure. Maybe someone else has a better idea. A bad head gasket?? Look at the plugs, one of them may show you something and check the compression and it should narrow it down. Wayne

Oil usually comes out of the tail pipe as clouds of smoke with a bluish cast (might appear gray or white to some people) Water comes out as a white cloud. The black cloud is associated with too much fuel. Perhaps your carb is supplying too much fuel because the float is stuck open? Your overchoking comment seems to support this theory.

Good luck

it is unknown how long the engine sat without being turned (no idea if assembly oil was still in there). plugs weren't torqued in and black stuff was leaking from each cylinder. smoke seemed like oil, but i'm not sure because it looked a bit white to be oil and didn't have that same smell. black drudge coming from exhaust flange and tailpipe along with the plug holes. it seems to be only when i push the throttle or overchoke it (as warmin up, keeping choke stationary eventually 'overchokes' it.) this leaking from all cylinders seems pretty strange for the stuck ring idea. bad head gasket would explain it, but water's wet and oil's clear. not only would i hate it to be any of these things, it just doesn't seem right to have happened to ALL cylinders. taking the cumbustion process back one step, could it be entering the intake from the carbs?

i'm gonna try to do a comp. check tonight

well i just did a compression check, 3 checks on each cyl
Cyl #1 = 100 105 105 lbs/squ. in
Cyl #2 = 100 90 95
Cyl #3 = 90 95 95
Cyl #4 = 95 100 95

i do not know what is good or bad here so help me out.
I've got the little vent can on the timing cover going to the intake, that may be another possibility.

as it turns out, i need to put the PCV valve on (don't know if i've got one. i disconnected the hose from the intake to the timing cover and oil smoke stopped. problem solved. now if i could just figure out how to install the choke cable without taking off the dash, i doubt that'll happen

Do your carbs have a vacuum port that comes from the base at an angle? (angled towards each other)

Remove the tach, you can get to it from inside the tach hole on the dash.
