New elliptical springs

Just installed new springs on rear end of my 58 Bugeye and now it sits way high! Will they settle down and return to the normal height ? It's freaking me out seeing the rear end higher than it should be.

Nope. I removed a few leafs, then installed some wedges to bring the ride height down. Some people just remove the top three leafs, and place them at the bottom as a spacer.

Ditto I didnt remove any leaves but did wedge the thing down.
yea makes it looks like something that BIG DADDY ROTH would have drawn. cartooish huh..
 
I think I like Trevors solution.
 
They do settle down after about 15 years, I also shimmed mine down on my other 59 which has been sold. Now I get the originals re-arced if they need it. Usually they do not.
1/2 leafs are a whole 'nother story.
 
Thanks guys. It was a real shocker to see how high that little Sprite's fanny was in the air. A whole different look!

Once again, thanks for the advice. Can someone be more specific about wedging down the springs? Do you remove a few leafs and wedge? Hoping for specific instruction.

I'm installing new, 1/4 elliptical springs today on 60 BE. After consulting with Colin Dodds in Australia (referred by Peter Caldwell after he rebuilt my shocks), I am taking the scond and fourth longest leafs and fitting them to the bottom of the spring pack.

I'll let you know how she turns out.

the nice thing about that approach is that you can add them back if the spring later settles.
 
I finished installing the new springs last evening. As I explained above, I took the second and fourth leafs and fit them to the bottom of the spring pack. BE is exactly 1/2" higher in rear...which it needed to be...old springs were loose and sagging.

It rides great! No bottoming out. Tracks well. Along with getting the shocks rebuilt by Peter Caldwell, it's the most signicant improvement that I've made to the BE.

Are the bottom of the sills level from front to back?
 
Methinks Frogeyes have quarter-elliptics, later models semi-elliptics.
If you really have elliptics, small wonder it sits high! :smile:
