New drug for COPD lung disease- -seeks US approval

Thanks for posting this, Dale. I'll print it and show it to the Doc next visit.

I do not believe that DAXAS has yet been approved for sale in the United States by the FDA.

Again...be leary of how soon/if this drug will be approved on the formularies of most insurance companies. Many have a six-month moratorium on new drugs, and depending upon contracting, may find the drug with numerous Prior Approval hoops and a copay level on "non-formulary, third tier".

I have been following Daxas (roflumilast) for the past four years.
No it is not yet approved for use in the USA but approval is expected in 2010.

Daxas is NOT a stand alone medication as it was proposed
in year 2004 and turned down by the FDA as such.

The latest testing of roflumilast has been as a coctail
used with Spiriva and Advair (combination steroid with a
bronchodilator.)

The COPD coctail trials indicate a marked improvement in patients
FEV1 tests and also a reduction in the annual
rate of decline in lung function.

I know of several BCF members with various degree of COPD.
This is the first new COPD drug since Spiriva was introduced
almost 6 years ago. Anything to enhance our quality of life
or extend our lives will be welcome.

Kerry!!! Have you quit those &^#$^&* cigarettes?
