Hi Gals and Guys:
Our 7 year old computer sorta went TU on Friday. The guru managed to copy all of our data files to a thumb drive. We bought a new computer yesterday and got it up and running with Windows 7 and a new copy of MS Office Pro 2010. Now...
How do I tranfer my data from the thumb drive to the new computer? I'm fairly computer illiterate and some of you are EXPERTS!! We have Word files, photos, etc. Help?

Hi Gary - easy job.

If the thumb drive is like most other thumb drives, you insert it in a USB port on the computer (usually on the front or the back).

The drive will eventually show up on the desktop.

Double click the drive icon to open it.

Inside you'll see (hopefully) several folders that contain your old documents.

Put the mouse pointer over one of the folders, hold down the left mouse button, and literally drag the folder to the desktop. Release the mouse button.

Do the same with any other folder which show up on the thumb drive icon.

If it were mine, I'd probably just leave those folders on the desktop. But if you want to "convert" to the new MS Office version format you now have, keep reading:

Choose a file in one of the new desktop folders. Double click on it, and the computer should either open it automatically (using the word processor app or other default apps on the computer). Or, it should ask you which app to use. Most likely, choose Microsoft Office Word, or Excel for spreadsheets, etc.

If you have non-Word files, just tell us here and we'll talk you through the rest of the process. Photos and pictures should open easily in whatever default viewer app you now have.

The whole trick lies in remembering where you *save* the files, once they've been imported into the new applications. (Or, as I said, just leave them in the desktop folders, as "old data".)
