New Car???

I just had a strange opportunity land in my lap. One of my student's parents has a 1990 Volvo 740(?) wagon. It has been parked at her mechanic's place for over 6 months and she heard we "work on cars" and wondered if we might like to buy it ($400)
Its in real nice shape (body looks good, leather interior, 3rd seat, sunroof etc.) It starts (with a jump) but will not run. When you put a load on it the it cuts out, sputters and dies between 1000 and 1500 RPM. It won't go above that. Her mechanic said he had looked at it and that he put a new fuel pump on and had replaced the mass air flow (We kinda question that) but that he really thinks its the computer. (Mass air flow $35.00 on e-bay, used computer $70-$100) It really sounds good at idle, just won't go above that 1500 mark and sputters and dies when you give it gas.
We jumped it and idled it for several minutes, but it doesn't appear that it is taking a charge (alternator?)
We were thinking it would be kind of nice to have to tootle around in for a few months until I can get the B running and dressed the way I want (without feeling pressured while gas prices go back up)
Since I trust you guys, any thoughts? opinions?

Terri

I should mention..these cars go for around $1200- $1500 on e-bay. If I do this, its for a temporary driver until I can get into my B, then I plan to sell it, so I guess my fear is what could be the issue and does it sound like it would be over $600 to get it running?

What shape is the coil in? Classic description of a weak coil.

Wow, this is why I came here! The coil looks old and weak. That would be the cheapest thing to start with wouldn't it? Thank You! I'll keep y'all posted....it still isn't set until the money changes hands but I think we may go for it.

A better place to seek answers is the Swedish Bricks site. They have a general FAQs section and one specifically for the 700 FAQs and although they do not have a nice, user-friendly forum like the BCF they do operate a mailing list that you might join and then ask your question.

A forum is run by Volvo Community that you could look at too and join to ask questions.
