New Bumper Guards For BJ8

Hello all,

I received a shipment of new chrome bumper bars and their accompanying guards for the front and rear. When attempting to replace the old guards with new, I noticed how the new ones, when studying their profile from the side (or from the point of touching the horizontal bar going rearward to the outer edge), actually protrude roughly 1/2 inch or more than my old ones (Sorry I cannot give specifics yet for they are at a different location, at the moment).

But for the moment, if someone wants to measure theirs from say, where it meets the indented part of the horizontal bar to its outer edge, it would be a help.

Obviously, I can no longer use my bolts to fasten these thicker guards to the bar and am just curious if the new, thicker ones I now have are factory spec.

I will post the dimensional differences between my new and old ones soon.

Thanks so much.

Paul

I am not sure what you mean with "guards"
Is it the same as overriders, the two vertical parts on the bar ...

The original overriders are a bit flat on top
The "fake" ones are round and have a deeper M shape to fit over the bar

Best to have your old ones rechromed. A good shop can repair them before rechroming them.

Hello again,

Finally, took some photos of these overriders or guards as referred to for comparison.

From one of the posts above, it seems clear the new overrider does have this rounded portion at top, which I did not notice right away. Also, notice how the side projection of the new one at right is greater by 1/2" overall, compared to the existing at left.

I guess my existing one at left is the original design and since all are not in bad shape, I will at some point refurbish them and reinstall. Just wasn't sure which was the original design but for now, I will live with installing the new ones for awhile.

Hey Paul,
Same problem with the reproduction bumpers out there - not quite identical and not nearly as thick steel. Good that you have your old ones to redo at some stage.
Regards,
Mike

Yes, not quite identical and it seems the steel thickness is about the same. I did not notice any appreciable difference, anyway.

As for the new reproduction bumper bars (horizontals), they are pretty close to my originals. I had to do some modifications to the existing bracket supports for the license plate in order to get it to fit to the bumper bar. Otherwise, overall not bad.

Considering the sale price, I had to go with it. And I am owed a new bar due to the defects in the chrome plating for the rear.

Thanks,

Paul
