Somewhere, there's a practical statement coming out of this article from years ago. Modern technology could get involved in a project like this. But, you fly it first, I'll go second! :devilgrin:

Paul - that is quite an aircraft. By recycling its 10 gallons of water (steam to condensate to water to steam, etc.) it had quite a range - altho' it couldn't recycle the oil used for the burner!

Besler actually developed several other engines for other purposes.

So now I am wondering....could the engine power a dynamo/generator/alternator etc. which could power an electric heating element to boil the water? I am sure there are dozens of holes in that idea....or someone would have done it already!

This is interesting:

1930s: George D. Besler and William J. Besler's prototype steam biplane, based on a Travel Air 2000, flew several times at Oakland airport. It was powered by a two-cylinder, 150 hp (110 kW) reciprocating engine designed by the <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">Doble Steam Motors Company </span></span> Here is one of Doble's steam cars from Leno's Garage:
