New addition to the fleet to replace my motorcycle

The real truth is that I've eyed these for years as a way to do some longer-distance road trips (like to pop over into Colorado to drive those great roads). I used to use the motorcycle for this, but my bike days are at least on pause for a while.

And to get serious for a moment, I just attended my 3rd celebration of life this year, the second for a friend from my car club. A reminder that life is short and it's time to go do those things I want to do.

One of the realities of my calling is that I have sat with far to many widows/widowers who said 'we were always planning to.... (fill in the blank - trip/ adventure/ etc etc) and now it is too late. Do those things indeed!

When I was flying gliders a friend of mine told me I had a death wish. "No" I said, it was a life wish.

I've spent a lot of time thinking this year, and decided that I want my 50's to be a decade of doing. I've been reconfiguring the stuff I have, focused on what I need to have in order to be able to do the things I want to do. Something I've wanted to do for years is take some longer roadtrips in a really fun car. And now I can.

This is how I've always described the Elan. Had to swear off two wheels if 'mits 'n me were to continue.

Thanks, Walter. I got asked that same question when I had my first Bugeye -- my answer was always "just." They didn't have full sized individuals in mind when they created these small, nimble sports cars. But I like them anyways.

It's also proving to be a good motivator to get me up in the morning to exercise. I can't make the car's seat wider, but I can work on making my seat a little narrower. ;)

"Big" Healeys were designed for someone up to 6'-2", the height of Roger Menadue.
 
Here's a quick update after 1000 miles on the new Miata.
  • It's a hoot to drive. Really feels a bunch like my MGB, but with twice the power. And air conditioning. And heated seats. And sound deadening
  • Slightly more cramped than the MGB, though, particularly for the passenger.
  • Winter tires (Blizzak) are surprisingly quiet.
  • According to the car computer, my average over the last 1000 miles is 40mpg. That includes a few spirited drives up in the canyons.
Overall I remain happy with the purchase and hoping for many good miles to come.

The Miata is about as close as you can get to a Little British classic in a modern car. We loved ours.
