New 1980 MGB owner

Hi everyone! I recently purchased a 1980 MGB at auction. My first British car!
I was able to get it home, but I have been having some problems with start up. It appears that the autochoke assembly on my carburetor is loose, and I also had a problem with the throttle cable slipping out. (I think I solved the latter problem by replacing the worn out spring with a new one that offered more tension.
I think I’ve positively identified my carburetor as a Zenith 175 CD 5T.
I am confused about the distributor. Although, based on my engine number, I should have the Lucas 45 DE4 electronic triggering model, it looks to me like a traditional points-type distributor.

Alan - welcome to the asylum!

First off, congratulations on the MG. I started with a '74 MGB 20 years ago, and altho' I've moved on to other cars, I've still got the bug. How'd you get interested in Little British Cars?

Do you have any kind of workshop manual for the '80 MGB?

1980 was over 40 years ago. It's like there have been many improvements (?) and modifications to your car since then.

Good to have you with us. You might want to post your tech questions in our MGB area:

PS - agree with you on the distributor. Definitely points - not electronic.

Thanks! I will post question in MGB forum.
I have always loved MGs because my late uncle owned several. I even had an MG calendar on my wall when I was in middle school.
I’ve bought Haynes and Porter and also ordered the Owners Workshop Manual.
I’m feeling pretty confident that what I have is a probably a cheap Lucas clone rather than an actual Lucas. Might be worth swapping out.
