Did anyone else miss part of the World Series last night to watch the "Rides" program on TLC? They had a great show about Unique Performance, located in Farmers Branch, Texas. They are manufacturing "new" Shelby GT-500s from old 1967 Mustang fastbacks and they are able to use the Shelby name on the finished product, complete with a new Shelby VIN.

One model is called the Super Snake and has a brand-new supercharged, all-aluminum, 750-HP 427. No mention of prices, but "Eleanor" is their best-selling model--a 428 CI gray and black clone of the "Gone in 60 Seconds" cars designed for the movie by Chip Foose.

I saw that program a few weeks ago. Its pretty cool that they are building those cars, and are making money at it.
 
I remember a company a few years back that was doing similar business in muscle cars - they would take a Pontiac Tempest/Lemans and turn it into a GTO - caused quite an uproar in the purist muscle car collector circles. I see nothing wrong with it as long as you know exactly what you are buying. There are apparently a lot of "fake" cars out there being sold as original rare models.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif but the 1967 Shelby GT-500s from Unique Performance are licensed by Shelby, have 427/428 engines built in Las Vegas by Shelby, have Shelby "continuation" VIN numbers, and have the dashes signed by Shelby himself. And they are considered to be 1967 Shelby GT-500s by the State titling agnecies.

Of course, the purists are always going to downgrade such cars. But, if they are good enough for Shelby, a lot of people are still going to pay a premium for the cars on the auction block. And they are not "fakes" even though they were not built by Shelby Motors in 1967. These GT-500s are certainly as "Shelby" as the Cobras still being produced by Shelby from left-over parts and new engines, but I guess this is another of those gray areas that we discussed on another thread about 2005 cars. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
