Nest Thermostat

can you trust Google search to find the down low on Google privacy questions?
Inspiring minds want to know

The Nest thermostat can learn your schedule, but won't share those very personal details with its new parent company Google unless you give it the OK, the company announced. :rolleyes2:

Really, If you believe that, I have a bridge for sale, a toll bridge at that. :highly_amused:

From the article: "For example, the device “learns” not to blast cool air through the house on a hot summer’s day during the hours everyone is at work."

So ... how does it know you've gone to work? (and left the house empty)

This is an internet device. Talk about a hacker's dream ...

My son in law had one for a year. He just put in a second on another zone. They like it obviously. I'm sure it could be hacked like every thing else. Over a period of time it learns your living habits. Last sumner they were away and left the AC turned up. On the way home he used his phone to turn it down so when they arrived it was cool.

Have had one for a year. It is nice not having to remember set it when coming and going. Just set what heat and cool temp you want when your home and the low and high temps you want when your away.

I've always used programmable thermostats in my homes (even old clunky ones from about 1980)... and love them. The newer digital ones have anticipatory features and are smarter than the previous generation. My current one is a veritable computer and was part of the new system. However, none of them were linked to anything other than the furnace or A/C. I haven't had any interest in the newer, remote-control, themostats (that are part of a service). Frankly, it's not that hard to teach your thermostat what you need it do do on a daily basis. :fat: I'm sticking with that.

My problem is that the upstairs thermostat is were the spare rooms and where the guest stay.
We have people in and out all the time and the settings change accordingly.
I would like to be able to monitor that one from my seat where my lazy butt is anchored.

That's where I'm confoozled. Other than being able to turn on your a/c from your smart phone ... what advantage is the Nest over just having a programmable thermostat?

The nest would be ideal for that. We were at a gathering at my daughter's and were trapped inside by the rain. My daughter looked at her husband and said can you turn the AC down its stuffy in here. Out came the I phone and done.

I'm with you Mark... if you can train a bra, you can certainly teach a thermostat.

It learns I guess.
Other than that none
But that's what I am looking for
I had the same type of thing for my Sprinkler system in my WA house.
I controlled the irrigation from my desk.
Will be doing that here as it is even a longer walk to the unit as it is outside

LOL - good one Elliot. But can you teach an old bra new tricks?

Oh no Mark... I can't answer that question here since I like this place

I have had the old programmable thermosates. You don't have to set it for heat only or cool only unless you want to. I have set for heat/cool. With the temp I want for heat and one for cool when home. And high and low temp when it goes to auto away. It will go to auto away in about two hours after sensing no movement until it senses movement. You can manual set it to away until you change it. Like not having to set every time I go and come

Just heard this on NPR.
Seen those fancy new refrigerators that are hooked to the internet? Hackers have recently found a way into them so that YOUR refrigerator sends out spam! Perhaps one's thermostat, one day, might be posting email about Viagra.

A friend and former co-worker (and former boss) has one and loves it. Tells me it has reduced a lot of wasted energy for him and saved him a ton of money. I plan to get one soon.
