I HAVE BEEN HEARING ALOT OF RUMORS ABOUT MGB ELECTRICAL. DO THEY ALL NEED A REWIRE TO BE RELIABLE, OR ARE THERE JUST A FEW THINGS TO UPDATE, WHAT SHOULD I EXPEXT FOR MY GIRL AND I TO BE ABLE TO TRUST A 1977 MGB ROADSTER TO GO FOR A WEEKEND TRIP UP THE COAST WITHOUT WORRY,IM OPEN TO ALL COMMENTS.

Brian, welcome to the forum! I am not an MG guy, but British cars in general have a reputation - sometimes deserved and sometimes not - for having electrical problems, but I would not let that stop you. My feeling is, a 1977 MG will probably not have any more or less electrical issues than a typical GM car that is as old. Just my opinion.

Hello Brian,

1st. "Welcome" to the wonderful world of "LBCs" (Little British Cars) on the "BCF".

I`ve owned, (You can just about name the LBC), and despite all the "Lucas" rumors; I personally have had "NONE"!!

Call it "LUCK" or simply call it "PREVENTIVE MAINTENACE"??

Simply look out for the obvious things that may go wrong.

As Basil mentioned; Check into the "MG" Forum and fire away.

Have Fun,

Russ

Welcome, Brian....come on over t the MG Forum & we'll run through the basics of maintaining a good Lucas electrical system.....not real hard so long as DPO's haven't gotten into it!

Any thirty year old car is susceptible to problems.

I'd suggest a good inspection of the electrical system looking for loose connections, poor grounds, and any wiring or other added bits etc. Those tend to create most of the problems encountered, and may be easily fixed.

Welcome to the forum. I too have owned several british cars including a 73 Triumph Dolomite, a 68 Vauxhall Victor, a 66 Ford Anglia, a 62 Mini, a 66 Morris Minor and my current 63 MG Midget. All of them had minor electrical problems during the time I owned them, things like intermittent lights, horn ect, but none had any worse problems than other cars I owned from Japan, Germany, USA, Italy ect. Most of the problems I ever had were due to the connecting plugs or individual grounding points.

yes the grounds can corode like any old car I have an old benz which I had to clean the electical connections.
part of the issue is that they were not top market cars and so the second and third owners picked them up cheap and were cheep on the repairs or did stuff them selfs in a hog poge way (Im guilty of that too) so 30 years later they are not in as great shape as a jag XK 150 or high end benz or aston martin

cheery
