Negotiating new car price

My two cents: the "dealer invoice" price isn't usually what the dealer actually paid. Dealer buys in bulk, and the distributor sends individual invoices *not* based on the actual price the dealer paid.

Consumer Reports can get you lots of price info, as can other sites already mentioned. Main thing is, good luck if you're trying to negotiate "up" from invoice - as you never really know what the invoice price is.

Come to think of it - how can a website really know what prices were paid for specific cars in a given area? That sounds like guesstimating the final sale price for cars advertised on Craigslist!

Look up the term Dealer Holdback.

I sell Mazdas... Mazda, unlike many manufacturers, does not have a whole lot of markup in their cars. That is a fact. In addition, actual dealer cost is not far removed from invoice price on a Mazda. Add to this the fact that the CX-5 is Mazda's biggest seller, and therefore does not get the rebates and the programs that its siblings do.

That said, let me know the trim level, the color and if there are any accessories installed and I'll let you know what programs there may be, and suggest a fair price for both you and your dealer should be.

Steve,
PM sent.

My 2 cents.

While I don't buy new cars, a couple of things have worked well for me recently.

1. My mother recently bought an essentially new Versa. I was introduced to this website: https://www.cargurus.com/ very helpful and easy.

2. A friend got me on to this - decide what you want and how much you will pay and write a check on the salesman's desk - gets their attention in a big hurry. (PS they won't be able to actually use the check as it will need to be certified) but, very effective "bottom line" bargaining tool. My friend even left it and said "Cash it if you want to" - they did.

"Cash it if you want to" and they did.

eek - so where'd the money go?

Into the bank in exchange for an amazing deal on a Suzuki Carry
