Neglected Exotic Cars

Offline
I've been searching again lately - not that I have the money - but I like to see if you can still buy a cheap Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Maserati every once in a while... Hopefully in a few years I'll have the money to buy one. I know the pitfalls of owning such cars... Expensive-hard-to-find parts, expensive maintenance, expensive insurance, etc, etc. But I still want to own one. Well, last night my search found me one of each - not necessarily cheap, but still affordable.

1978 Ferrari (Dino) 308 GT4 (v8)- in good mechanical shape, with service records red with the boxer style black lower half. 45,000 miles $23,500

1984 Ferrari 400i Convertible - black - runs $24,500

1970 Maserati Indy - Red, in storage 10 years $16,950.

1971 Maserati Merak - Red, runs $23,900

1974 Lamborghini Espada V-12 Brown and tan - looks great, but has been sitting in storage for 5 years $14,950.

Unfortunately for me, I'd probably go with the ugliest car there, and buy the Espada... I've always wanted a v-12... And I've always liked Lamborghinis. After a bit of study, it's essentially the same engine as the early Countach had, and only 1200 or so Espadas were ever built... and less than 400 of the series 3 cars... Sounds very rare to me. Not sure I've ever actually seen a real Lamborghini either. I might go for the 400i, but they didn't originally come as convertibles, and there's no telling who hacked the roof off, and whether or not the car will fold in half 30 minutes after you drive away. But I'd be proud to own almost any of these cars. Even if it needed more money thrown at it than I could afford. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

One day, I'll own a true exotic.. Until then, I'll keep surfing, and watching. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Try telling yourself that the British are exotic.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Not my RB MGB /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif, but my Alfa is sortof exotic. But it's still just a 4-cylinder.

Now, If I had a AH 100, or an Aston Martin, or an E-type (maybe a XJS) - those might be considered exotic british iron. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Its all in the mind... think relative, too.

After all, it could be a Ford (or a Fiat)....

The "exotic" I drive daily is a fine example of Gallic engineering ingenuity lovingly assembled with the best of British Olde Worlde craftsmanship, providing an exquisite motor vehicle imbued with Parisiene style, Continental flair and a positive joir be vivre on the road.... what more could anyone want in an "exotic"????

pretty delusional for an 18 year old Peugeot 405 diesel estate, huh???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Think I posted about this before, but right by my old office(moved earlier this week) is a Dino sitting on the end of a driveway to a million dollar house....The owner was going to sell it to me, and backed out of some reason, told me he likes it there for security. It's in beautiful shape as it spent most of it's life sitting in the garage, only in the last year has it been outside......What a shame. There was also a black 328 sitting in the undergorund I used to park at(million dollar condo's) I left a few notes on it, but heard nothing...Then it disappeared on day...Had California plates too. And lately somone told me about a XK120 sitting in the underground of the Four Season hotel here in toronto, i didn't beleive him, but I snook down there anyway and found a very nice original XK140 or 150 under a cover right by the entrance to the underground....covered in dust and sitting for years, but otherwise it looks pretty good..Left a note there as well, nothing so far /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I don't consider any of those "cheap"!

Someone I know got a Lotus 26R (racing version of Elan) out of a garage in Newport Beach. The owner had died years before, then his wife died. The estate did not know it from a regular Elan. He scored...

I have always liked all versions of the 308, especially the Bertone Dino. I don't care if its the cheapest lowest rung on the ladder.

Espada look great (IMHO anyway) but I'd bet the annual running costs on one of those would be equal to a whole rather nice LBC or two. Still for affordable exotic to quickly put you in the poor house a Maserati Biturbo would do the trick. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree Espada's look good... especially when you consider how actually small they are in height. (46 inches tall fresh from the factory)... But they give the appearance in photos of being this huge long stationwagon hatchback in pictures. They do look good in my favorite car color though - black. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif (but then so does a VW rabbit)

One more thing though.... My wife has forbid me to buy even a low-budget Ferrari or Lambo before I get her an E-Type Jaguar convertible.... Hows that for some good lovin'? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

You missed one exotic /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Magnificent Ferrari motor without the price tag of a Ferrari convertible and its a Dino !

Ok so it is a FIAT Dino but fire that V6 up and no one will ever believe it is a FIAT. I was even told it was Ferrari-esque by a stranger at a gas station one time. Many of them have been improperly badged as Ferrari's just like the Ferrari Dino has often been re-badged (A Ferrari Dino never had Ferrari badges on it from the factory)

A Fiat Dino has always been on my wish list.

Mike you have some cool cars.
