Need Tip to remove stubborn headlight trim rings

How is it done?
When you have good old chrome headlight trim rings on bad old fenders, how do you get the rings off without damage?
These haven't been off the car in about 39 years.
Obviously a tip is needed here /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

The ideal tool is one of the paint can openers that used to be available - the ones with a small right angle lip on one end and a loop on the other end. the lip is hooked under the headlight rim ar the very bottom and then pulled sharply. If you can get some spray lubricant into the bottom of the rim, so it gets on the spring that holds the rim in place, it should make it a bit easier. Another method (probably not approved) if you have just the plain generic sealed beam lights is just to break the light and work from the inside of the rim (sealed beam lights are cheaper than new rims).
Cheers,

Ok, so from what you said I gather there is a spring holding it on at the bottom?

I think I've got some very old working headlights there, so I'd rather not break them.

Thanks!

Thanks guys, with deft application of screwdriver and hammer I got one to pop right off.
