Can anyone give me some first hand experience with a carb rebuild shop? My HS-4's need shafts/bushings, etc. Who can I trust for a quality job?

Gary Martin, 605-484-8081, South Dakota.

Gary will rebuild your carbs to superb concours condition.

As good as they get.

I had TRF do mine including the new shafts and bushings and they did a very good job. I will be going to Jeff Palya for my tri-carb setup this fall. For aesthetics, his micro polishing is the best and his carb work is second to none.

Thanks...I should have known TRF would do 'em. And they are 6's...not 4's as I had stated...brain ****.

How long did TRF take?

Better call TRF first. I had a conversation with Charles Runyon a few weeks ago and he told me that their ablility to do mechanicals is currently dimenished because of loss of personel. Not sure of which area they are lacking mechanics but it be better to ask first.
Back to Gary Martin in South Dakota, Gary did my triple setup for me. Everything is micro-polished, properly cad plated and anything that has unacceptable wear is replaced with new. All his gasket materials are premium and the carbs came preset for ideal operation. I essentially bolted them up and cranked. Boom, first turn.

When I had mine done, it was in January and TRF turned them around in two weeks. The car started and ran pretty well on the first crank over as well. Minor tweaking after that.

Hi YankeeTR,

You've got HS-4s on a TR3A? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Anyway, apparently Jeff Palya is selling a nice looking pair of rebuilt H6s (TR4 type, w/push-on hose fittings) on eBay right now, says in the auction he can rebuild most any SU or ZS carbs as good as new or better.

I'm not personally familiar with his work, but there's Tinster's and 71tr's referrals above, and the carbs in the auction sure look nice (Heck, maybe a little TOO shiny for my TR). They have 7 bids to $255 on them already... with 8 days and 19 hours still to go!

"Paltech" is his monniker on eBay, with lots of positive feedback, and it's auction #290025391214. Also he has a website at www.paltech1.com

Nope..They are HS-6's....my goof...

Had my HD-6's rebuilt by forum member Banjo (he also did the SU's on Jaybird's BinABox). Mine look great, car isn't running yet so can't do any more than admire the cosmetics at this point.

My question on shaft replacement is why not re-condition the originals???? Modern epoxies hold airplanes together, they can (and will) fill in the worn area of a brass shaft. It can then be carefully filled down and smoothed off. This type of repair will last a long time, but how long is a question of lubrication and the epoxie used. But it is easy fast and cheap...

It's not just the shafts that wear, it's the carb body itself. You need to ream the bodies and install oversize shafts OR ream the bodies and install a bushing to use the standard shafts.

Any excessive clearance in this area really screws up good idle characteristics.
