I'm at work, i got about a quarter tank. i wanted to put a couple gallons (as in two), just for some insurance on the way home. i dont have any extra lead substitute. will whats left in the car work with the fresh fuel. or is this a horrible idea?

I personally don't see the problem as I have ran tankfulls of gas without any lead substitutes without any problems. Better than walking!

Are you saying you always put in additive in with each tank of fuel? I don't know of anyone who does that. I've never had any problems and I've never heard of any with replaced valve seats or original. Are you talking about something else?

The only thing I've added is "stabil" during the winter months. Most people don't drive their AH enough to warrant adding a "lead substitute". IMHO.

If your car has had a "valve job" in the last thirty (>30) years, there's a good chance that you already have either hardened valve seats installed, or that the the existing ground seats have been induction hardened.

Also, given the mileage these cars see nowadays (unlike when they were merely daily transportation) it's very unlikely you'll see valve seat recession (a condition that never really panned out as bad as the doomsday-sayers predicted anyway).

Other than using premium fuel and Stabil prior to storage during winter months, I do nothing else to improve fuel quality.

This topic reminded me of this bit of information that I wanted to share with the forum. I can't remember where I got it from...
I apologize in advance if I got it from this forum and am now repeating it...

Here is a web site to help you locate gas stations that sell pure gasoline, ( not mixed with any alcohol ), in the US and Canada.

For most of the 48 years I've owned my Healey, I either used Amoco or lead-free gas. I drive the car at least once every couple of weeks when the weather is nice and shift around 5K RPM. My engine has had a valve job in about 1969 (blown head gasket) when I (mistakenly) told the machine shop to shave 60 thousands (instead of 6 thousands) giving me a compression of 170 lbs.

Bottom line, since my car has been running good for all these years without lead, you should be able to make it home without a problem.
