Need more info on the De Tomaso Pantera

Not sure if this is the right place to post about this, but I was fascinated. I recently watched the Jack Pegoraro episode of Fuelling Around, and he spoke so fondly about his De Tomaso Pantera. I know it isn't British, but I just wondered if anyone on here had driven one because I didn't even know they existed, and now I'm very curious.

I don't think you'll find many folks on this forum interested in a $120,000 and up non-British car.

$120? I'd be interested!

Actually, I've always kinda lusted after one ever since they first appeared. Way past my pay scale, though...

I'd have one in a heartbeat (and before a Lambo or a Ferrari) of course everyone would think I was a pathetic old git trying to rediscover my youth.

About all I can add is a bit of trivia. Many will be aware of the Canadian Institution of Tim Horton Donuts (8 of every 10 cups of coffee sold in Canada are Tim Hortons). Tim Horton was a hockey player who spent most of his career with the Maple Leafs. On feb 21 1974 he died driving from Toronto to Buffalo. He was driving his Pantera. He was drunk (a fact that was suppressed until 2005) and probably had pain killers as well.

About the only Pantera story I know.

Might as well post up a picture!

(Or three!)

I'd absolutely have one, but I'll never be able to afford one. So, by all means talk away about them and I'll gobble up every detail and photo.

I think that’s Peter F’s car…. He called it The Red Tomato!

I always liked his gold treatment on those magnesium wheels!

Still, you got a lot for your money…. even though they were “not completely finished” when delivered to the showrooms.

But very quickly, the owners had them sorted out. Now, there are published solutions to any of the early issues, and the issues have been fixed on all the cars currently on the road.

Another thing about them is that the owners didn’t hesitate to “make them their own”, with customization. The original “Italian Hot Rod”.

And you can get lots of power out of the Cleveland engines… as many Mustang owners knew!

Here’s a nice one with a twin-turbo setup….

If anyone is interested in learning more about them, or possibly meeting someone who’s got one for sale – the Pantera Owners Club of America is running a membership special – $30 for nine months….

We are trying to get some of the old members who have let their memberships lapse back into the club…. And try to gain some new members!

It’s a pretty good deal – you’ll get all the publications electronically…

You can reach out to me via private message if you have any issues and I can help you work it.

Mine is the yellow one (but not the one with the twin turbos). The blue one and the orange one are also from Arizona…

I drove one in the late 70s. A fellow brought it to an autocross that I was driving in and asked if I would drive it and give him feedback. I loved it and have wanted one since then. My wallet doesn't agree with my brain so I will just have to win the lottery before I can buy one. It's a great car!
