Need help with Engine Number

I have recently purchased a 1974 TR-6. I know the engine in it isn't original, and I would like to find out more about the engine. The engine code number is: KD 54879 E. Thanks, David K.

Hi David ... welcome to the forum.

Sorry to be the bearer of some not so good news, but according to the Triumph Spitfire website: https://www.triumphspitfire.com/, the KD prefix means the engine is a 2.0L from a MkI or MkII GT6.

In stock configuration it had 9.25:1 compression.

Specifically, I think that the "KD" prefix is for the US-spec GT6+ engine, circa 1969. I don't have spec's handy here at work, but these were "rated" at 95hp compared to the home market's 104hp.

Thanks for the information. How does this compare with the stock engine? I know it's larger, but this has higher compression and similar HP rating.

Still at work and still don't have figures handy, but I'd assume that the original 2.5 six would have more torque with its longer stroke.
