TR6 Need help on '74 TR6 windscreen frame removal

Repair manual on CD says I must remove the windscreen
frame (I think this means the frame to include the
windshield of the car) in order to replace my dashpad
cover.

Okay. Got the wood dash out (looks like spaghetti in there).

Instructions say: Pull the weather strip from the
screen pillars (short for windscreen pillars, pretty
sure). Confused about what weather strip they are talking
about -- at base of glass inside closest to windshield... sorry, hard time getting used to the British jargone ... starting from inner door frame or what?

Instructions further: Slacken the six nuts and bolts fastening the windscreen bracket, etc, as well as loosening the nuts and bolts at the bottom of the windscreen brackets.

Do I need to remove a wing in order to see these bolts holding the windscreen in by these brackets or what?

Thanks in advance,

I just did this a couple of weeks ago......

1) the weatherstrip that is refered to is the one that is glued to the windscreen side pillar where the glass rolls up against the side pillar. remove the door fuzzy weather strip first then you will see it. you only have to remove or pull it loose where it meets the door frame, you can leave it on the windshield side piller.

2) you do not need to remove the wings to access the bolts.

to loosen the bracket that holds the windscreen assy
open the door as wide as it will go, you will see the 2 7/16 bolt heads that you must loosen, the third bolt is accessed from inside the dashboard and is easily seen.

the 1/2 inch nut and washers at the bottom of the bracket must also be removed, this is holding the bottom of the threaded rod that holds the the windshield frame in the bracket.

after the nuts are off and the brackets are loose then the windshield frame can be removed easily by pulling up on it evenly at both sides.

the new dash pad will look nice and is well worth the trouble. Compaired to a windshield on a MGB this is a well designed piece of cake.

Hopefully 'easily' but some have experienced some resistance. Some have had to undo the brackets (which sort of clamp the posts) and wiggle them a bit.

At the very least you may want to keep the nut threaded loosely on the end of the posts so if the windscreen suddenly lets loose when you are lifting it it doesn't get launched into orbit.

As for the seal along the bottom edge of the windscreen frame... I has to use a thin plastic putty-knife thing to break that seal loose from the body before being able to lift the dingus off.

IMPORTANT....the key words here are THIN and PLASTIC...protect your paint. Mask off the area on the cowl around the wipers, from the weatherstrip under the frame out about 3" to 4", with two or three layers of masking tape.

Oh, take the wiper blades off first.

Here is what you'll be left with. Good time to clean up the frame and replace the weatherstrip as well. Use a 3M silicone sealer under the strip.

Is it possible to replace the pad by just lifting the windscreen and not removing it?

I wouldn't loosen the brackets at the body very much, if at all. If too loose, they can swing up enough to dent the body in front of the windshield seal. How do I know?
It is not a pleasant experience to have to do bodywork on your freshly painted car.
