I have an HP Vista machine with duel 300 gig hard drives, a gig of memory. It has the latest version of Internet Explorer. The problem is with Internet Explorer. Regardless if I'm using the IE browser or any of the other three browsers I have in this machine, a blank page will pop up just once during a session and totally engulf the screen, blanking out everything else. It is a total blank screen as if the monitor went south. I hit control, alt, delete and bring up the task manager and it says, Internet Explorer Blank Screen. I hit the end process button and it goes away leaving the previous web page in normal view. It will do this at random whether I'm on the net or not. I've went through every process I know to find out why it's doing this, but to no prevail. I even contacted HP and to my surprise, were no help. I could easily restore the whole system, but with over 250,000 files in this machine I don't want to do that. Any suggestions? PJ

You may have already done this, but have you run at least 1 spyware/adware remal program?

Umm... Vista, huh?

You don't wanna hear what my solution would be. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

It is probably too late, but but I have always used ad-aware and spybot to remove the junk that lives in the machines both here at home, and in the 500 machines at my job.

I would make sure you invest in a good anti-virus and Internet security program. I like Norton, and have used it for years. Make sure it is updated, and let the program run it's scans.

I have Norton's 360, the replacement for Norton's system works which wont work in Vista. My machine is virus free and is automatically maintained by Norton's. I installed spy ware terminator and it found one ad ware program that it deleted. The problem still exists. It seems that it is something in IEs software. If it wasn't for Windows utilizing IE to run some of it's programs, I'd get rid of it all together. I don't use it or it's email program, but all the info I've received, tells me not to un install it as it might cause issues in Vista. I'll try a registry organizing program. If that doesn't work, I'll back all my data and reinstall Vista from scratch. Don't want to do this, but I'll have no choice.

Okay. I know everyone has an opinion.

Antivirus proggies ~progress~ anon... unlike LBC's. Norton is no longer "Norton" IMO.

AVG is a really transparent and FREE antivirus proggy. If you have a corporate need the license fee is a bargain.

I will say that Vista has some problems, but then again, what MS OS does not? My company ran Win2k until our corporate IT weenies made us switch to XP. Our hardware won't support Vista, so we are pretty safe in the respect.

I agree that people have opinions about different programs, and OS installs, so go with what makes you happy.

I agree with you on Norton's Doc. System Works had some nice features, but then they redesigned the program to fit Vista and it isn't as good. 80 bucks down the drain. Oh well, what else is new? AVG is a good program. I have it in my lap top and it keeps it clean. I'm going to install it in this machine and possibly get rid of Norton's. Especially if there's a conflict. This machine has Vista Ultimate and if it wasn't for a higher authority in the house who just loves all the pretties of the program, I'd dump it and install something else. But, I like to eat and wear clean clothes,

so I'll persevere. If I get too disgusted, I'll go out to the shop and use the Linux machine.

I have been running Prevx on my home machine for quite a while. I installed it after a Trojan installed itself. Prevx cleaned it up, and warns / stops anything new from installing itself on the "bad list"

If there is something "bad" running on your system it will flag and kill it.
try it (it is free for the first 30 days, and then keeps running in detection mode) I kept it for free for several months until the next time it flagged something nasty and then payed for the full version which is not to expensive. ~$20 /year

ClamWin is my Anti-Virus software of choice for Windows these days. It's Open Source, under GNU GPL (free software licensing), and it's updated regularly.

Panda makes a good one as well. I have tried the Linux thing, but for some reason it just eludes me. I guess I have been a win guy for too long . Although I have a couple of Sun stations at work that are kind of neat.
