Microsoft has agreed to pay a California woman $10,000 after an automatic Windows 10 update left her computer unusable.

I got caught by that and hit the red X. Luckily I noticed what it was doing and managed to stop it before it did any harm. My wife runs the accounts for a choir she is in and the software she uses is not Wondows 10 compatible (in fact when I replaced my desktop I had to look around for new old stock as the software was only compatible with win 7 and not win 8)

That whole thing was a very bad PR move for Microsoft

thats OK I hear they will be offering an automatic U2 album download by way of an apology

Three or four weeks ago I spent several days removing 10 (reverting) for some folks. Several computers.
This is NOT the first time they have forced things onto folks. 10 years or so ago I got hit (with probably hundreds of thousands of others) with the WGA "critical" update that was forced.
That one did go to court..and the "judge" decided there was no case...that MS could force what they wanted...and everyone wondered how much stock in MS that person held.
I learned immediately how and where to kill updates, and they have been killed, MS unable to access, since.
I even did it to my XP-8 machine (that fools MS folks who worked on 8...they are convinced it is XP...and this was before 8.1...right down to Outlook Express).
At the time of the WGA fiasco, MS stated they had the capability to shut down any MS OS anywhere in the world at any time they wanted to..so I figure they may just do that in their quest for world domination.
10 is NOT the secure system folks have been led to believe.
Actually, XP with a decent AV is far more secure than 8, 8.1 and even 10 using MS AV.
I have a friend with F5 Networks (business security) who told me that...after he said "the bad guys don't care".
They are so busy trying to kill 8, 8.1 and 10 they haven't got time for obsolete OS...and the last exploit for XP was written over 2-1/2 years ago.
I'll give you one guess as to what the three PC's here have running on them...including this one.

IF MS makes it impossible to run this, I have a spare tower in the closet with Ubuntu already loaded..waiting.

I haven't trusted MS for 10 years. You should not either. Suggestion. Opinion.

:iagree: Had to "revert" a number of clients' machines when the 10 install choked 'em.

I had to put together a Win machine for Herself, she does graphics and illustration work here, Adobe warez compatibility is a must. So Win 7 Pro went into it. <sigh>

All other boxes are either XP Pro, CEntOS or other Red Hat derivations.
