We'll be heading to the Outer Banks In three weeks.
Where to go/who to see?
We'll be near Southern Shores, with a rental car.

Not too far to drive, but I'd recommend a dinner at Owen's and a breakfast at Sam & Omie's, both on the beach road and around milepost 16. Closer to Southern Shores, Collington Cafe is pretty good too.

Walk up the dunes at Jockey's Ridge if you can. See the Wright memorial. Stroll around "downtown" Manteo.

Take the free ferry ride to Okracoke at the end of Hatteras Island. Lighthouses at Oregon Inlet, Hatteras and on Okracoke as well. See Roanoke off Nags Head

I second CaptRandy. If you go to Roanoke the Elizabethan Gardens are really nice, and there is a nice aquarium nearby.

The Wright memorial is cool, Kittyhawk Kites is a neat store to check out. Get a kite when you first get there, then take it with you whenever you go to a beach. the wind is almost always good for kites.
Right near the ferry landing to Okracoke, at the southern tip of Hatteras island is the Graveyard Of The Atlantic Museum. Well worth the stop. Then catch the ferry to Okracoke.
Bodie island light is the one near the Oregon Inlet. that's cool. The Chicamacamico Life-saving station is neat. The Hatteras light is really cool. And you can climb it if you are okay with lots of stairs.
Good restaurants all along Rt. 12 You will love it. The Outer Banks is one of my favorite places on earth.

Oh, I almost forgot, another must-go restaurant: Tortugas Lie, around milepost 11.

Always something unusual on the menu, and as you're in a rental car, the non-LBC-friendly parking lot should not be a problem. Inside, the ceiling beams are covered in old personalized license plates, one of which reads BJ8, I think I know what kind of car it came from.

At the Manteo airport, opportunities to take a flight and see the OBX from the air; I once did an aerobatic flight in an open-cockpit Stearman there.

We'll be there this next Sunday, but on a limited budget.
however,I do love to find a great "local" breakfast place.
