Mystery Wiper Arm Attacfhment

This will be difficult to describe without a drawing, but... inside the wiper arm where it attaches to the shaft is a small striated "nut" that has a mini-tightening screw. It has cracked and I can't find a replacement. The people at Moss sent me a bezel kit, but it does not thave that little piece that helps attach the wiper arm to the shaft. Any ideas?

I can picture exactly the type of fitting you mean. I am going back to UK next week for a three week vacation. I have a few British car bits in my garage there. I may have wiper arm bits. I'll have a look and report back. Let me know if you get fixed up meantime.

Hi Herb,
The striated nut is intended to be an integral part of the wheel box shaft. The nut is originally staked to the shaft with three depressions. The mini tightening screw appears to be a previous repair attempt. These parts were never sold separately from the wheel box & it would be hard to secure a new nut to the shaft without cracking the nut. Your best bet is to get either a new (Moss #145-217) or good used wheel box & replace the whole wheel box assembly. You "might" be able to get a wheel box, remove the striated nut & attach it to your same shaft as previously. I don't know how successful it would be or how long it would last. Likely, NOT what you wanted to hear? Replacing the RH box (passenger side) would be fairly easy. Replacing the LH box would be a real project. I don't know if you could do it without first removing the instrument panel.

Mike:
Thanks a million. I look forward to hearing from you. If I get it solved, I'll let you know. Have a great trip.

Dave:
As usual, your advice is fabulous and much appreciated. The wiper arm in question is on the passenger side. I'll check the Moss catalog.

Hi again

I've been raking through my garage back in Scotland and the only thing I have is a wiper rack from a Triumph Dolomite Sprint. This uses the same 1/2 inch diameter "striated nut" that you describe for the 100, but it uses steel rods rather than the bowden cable for the mechanism. This means the wheel boxes are different. I could cut through one of the wheel box shafts and bring the striated nut back for you - but I think a new wheel box would be an easier job. Looking at my 100, the striated nut is fitted by being slipped over the shaft and the shaft end peened over.

Let me know

Mike:
Thanks for the offer. Perhaps that striated nut would work. Can you possibly bring it bac?. Thanks very much.
