TR6 Mystery Part

Hello,

This might be my first question posted. I'm changing the starter om my '76 TR6. After I removed the two bolts, I started wiggling and pulling the starter free. While doing so, the part shown in the pics below fell to the floor. I have no idea of what it is, or where it belongs. It's a steel part. I checked the new starter and I see no such part, easily visible. The part is dirty all over and shows no shiny surfaces anywhere. The hole is not threaded, and is dirty like the rest of the piece. Dimensions are: 1 7/16L
7/16H and 13/16W. I could not find this part in my service manual or Moss catalog. I'm sort of guessing this was sitting ON the starter, wedged next to the block. Thanks for any insight you can offer. I'm only 5 years into this car and still learning. IMG_1712.jpgIMG_1691.jpg

Thanks for your reply. I'm thinking the same thing. This afternoon I will check to see what things look like under there. The original exhaust has been upgraded so I'm not sure what I will be seeing. Thanks again.

I have always called them "pigs". If you have a Header/AM exhaust it may need a bit of weld on
one end to make it provide even pressure on both flanges.....
Mad dog

OK, I finally did a fairly thorough check around the intake and exhaust headers. I did see a few of the 'pigs' bolted in place, doing what they are supposed to do. Nowhere did I see a naked stud or anything that appears to be missing a bolt and some hardware, so I'm going back to my original thought that the pig dropped down onto the starter during the exhaust header modification, and was just replaced or not needed. So far, it's running like a beast, with no excess noise or smoke coming from the engine. Thanks for all your help guys!
