....so the letters keep telling me.
Since I've had the BGT, I keep getting letters telling me that my factory warranty is about to expire....I need to call NOW with my VIN and mileage to take advantage of this offer extending my factory warranty.
So I called them.
"Sir, that VIN only has 13 digits"
"I know"
"What is the year, make and model of the vehicle?"
"1970 MGBGT"

Long pause.

"I'm sorry sir, we can only cover vehicles since 1981"
"THEN QUIT SENDING ME JUNK MAIL!"

How to get even with the junk mailers of the world. Quick story and true.

I/we were getting numerous calls about rehabing the outside of our house - they were hawking a supposed new type of stucco. I answered about 3 or 4 phone calls (this was prior to the Do Not Call) and finally made an appointment for them to give me a price. They arrived and I greeted them on the porch and asked them only one question. "I really don't think I need stucco over my logs." We have a log home.

Was I mean? Probably so. But, this was the only way to vent and get them to stop calling.

So, good for you and your response to "Your vehicle warranty..."

I have one better about the telemarketers. I had one calling about replacing the siding on my house. I answered about five or six calls, until I finally let them come out to have a look, and to give me an estimate. I had tried to tell them that I lived in an apartment, but I guess the didn't believe me until the guy showed up with lots of pamphlets, tape measure, and a ladder.

I like the one about the extended warranty. I get them all the time for my Cougar. That and the letters telling me that the dealer is in need of my 94 Cougar for immediate resale. If I trade it in, the will give me (fine print says) up to $12,000.00 for the car.

I liked it (looking back) when, after working nights,
salesmen would call....
"Did I inturrupt you?"......
...."Yes,I work nights,& finally got to sleep - until
your call woke me up".
Seems that they never called back!

A good friend in western PA worked nights, kept being awakened by an outfit wanting to seal his (non-existent) basement against moisture. In spite of his telling 'em he didn't need that. Finally he'd had enuff and told 'em to come on over. When they arrived, he greeted 'em in his "work clothes" and gave 'em a really harsh dressing down, advised 'em NEVER to call again and that he'd best not ever see 'em out on the streets or he'd make their day miserable... He was a Pennsylvania State Trooper. That was the end of the calls.

I had a good time with one telehuckster. He was trying to sell me an extended warranty on my car whose factory warranty was about to expire. I declined, but he went on with "Think of it, Mr. Sherman, your car could suddenly fail without any warning and what would you do then?". I said I take good care of my car myself, I check things regularly, and it seems to be a very reliable car for many people. If it did break down, I'd probably either fix it myself or have it towed by AAA.

This was priceless:

"I'm sorry, that's not in my script. Can you please hold for my supervisor?"

I just said "Too bad, you lose! Thanks for playing!" and hung up.

Good on ya, Barry. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Gotta love the car warranty and dealership marketing people. I bought a car in Manassas Virginia in 1996. Got rid of it in 1999 in Florida. Somehow that original dealership (or manufacturer I suppose) tracked me down in Florida and started sending me advertisements. They want me to, for example, "drop by" with my 1996 Saturn and get a 10% discount on an oil change. Offer good at the Manassas dealership only.

Gotta love it.

I got a recall on my '96 Cherokee with 150k on it for a possible rubbing electrical wire. All old Cherokee's are already electrically challenged anyway.

I think that it was a ploy to get me into a dealership, tore it up and thru it out.

I get those all the time, "Sir, how would you like to never paint
your house again" is the line they tried to use on me, I explain
to the droid what I do for a living...

Install Vinyl siding and windows...

We use to answer the phone and if it was a telemarketer turn the phone over to my father in law (he had a stroke and stayed with us so we could take care of him) He loved to talk and would be on the phone for a long time until the marketer finally got tired and hung up. We get no calls even though he has passed on. He loved telling stories to the people on the phone for hours. He even had to tell a book salesman (after a long time) he couldn't order any because he could not read anymore (he listened to books on tape). We would split our sides (had call waiting for any important calls.

Telemarketers were bugging me to purchase stock over
the phone. I get fed up one day and told one of them
the phone number he had just called belonged to a dead
guy but was again being used and I was VERY interested
in his stock pitch.

He jumped right in with his pitch. I acted real interested
and real impressed with his company.

I made up a name, SS number and address and ordered
$30,000. worth of stock from that clown on my "instant
credit." I often wonder what he told his boss 2 weeks
later when no $30,000. check came in the mail!!

When I was growing up, my dad (a salesman himself), would act like he was all excited about the telemarketer's call, invite the caller to come over and sit down to discuss sales strategies and techniques and to look at his products. Never had any takers, or return calls.

In 2001 they told me my factory warrenty was running out and for only X dollars I could extend it yearly. Of course I did not, that was 6 years ago. No expenses yet.
