It finally arrived. TR3 motor with TR4 Head, 87mm, ported and polished, oversize valves, roller rockers, 290 cam, hardened head studs/bolts, new oil pump/filter, alum head cover. Looks great, all boxed just fine. Now I'm set to add all the accessories, fuel pump, water pump, thermostat, coil, Dizzy (Mallory unilite), mallory red wires, small belt conversion kit, alternator.. I want to get the motor ready to install Sat including the Toyota 5 speed transmission, and hope to have it bolted into the car on Sun... I have a ton of wiring work as I also have installed a rack and pinion kit... Hope to have it running by xmas.. So that really means Jan at the earlist!

Ready for a top and new wheels.... I really need a set of side curtins that need a rebuild.. If you have a set please send me a pm....

You guys don't know but you have led me to all this... Better one keeps asking... "So how much do you have in this car, really?" and I say "Not to worry, we are within budget" and I still havn't figured what that is!

I will post pictures as I progress...

Thanks for all your help guys...I think!

Dear Brother Roy:

On behalf of all of your brothers in oil out here in cyber space, I respectfully ask that you not excite us again with tales of a beautifully built engine without the proper pictures attached, so that we can savor the moment with you.

Respectfully,

PR

Roy,

My wife never asked how much I had spent when I did my restoration from 1987 to 1990. I had bought the car new in 1958 when I was 20 and we only got serious together in 1965 when I asked her to marry me in February, 1965 when the snow banks in front of her house were higher than the TR.

But I added it all up anyway. $13,000 for parts, $1000 for Misc. and $5500 for all the paint and painting done by a professional. Remember this $19,500 was 1989 Canadian dollars when the exchange was about 1.50 to the US dollar - so about US$13,000 total. My time was 1100 hours and my neighbour helped with another 400 hours all free and not included in the totals above.

When I started, I had a bugetted target of about $6000. Someone who had restored their TR4 told me that no matter what figure I had in mind, that I should double it. He was wrong. It should be tripled !

I will get the pictures taken soon and post them to my site.. I'll let you know when they are up..

Gary Martin called while we getting off the truck and told me my carbs would be complete and in the mail Monday..

Thanks for the comments

I have (I think) 2 sets of side curtains besides the ones I'm refurbishing for the car.

Such a deal we could make...

Uh,
what did the motor from tsi cost? send me a pm. i take it you sent yours for rebuild to them.

Capt Roy,
That TR3 sounds like my kind of resto. I'm in the process of doing almost the some thing, except for the Toyota 5 speed trans. Have you ever done that conversion before and if so, how difficult was it. After reading your post, I'm thinking of doing that conversion also. I've already installed the rack and pinion and oversized pistons. If you'd like to see some of my progres go to www.cardomain.com/ride/816145/7

Roy, you will be tickled pink with the carbs that Gary Martin does for you. He is extremely particular and the carbs will look better than new . Plus, he will probably have them set to just bolt up and crank. I cannot say enough nice things about Gary and his work.

Bill, who is Gary Martin and what company is he with?

Gary Martin does carb rebuiling as does Jeff at Paltech. Gary advertises in Hemmings all the time, I don't have a current issue but if you do look in Triumph parts and services right after the car for sale listings he'll be there.

I always say Not That Much when my other half when she asks how much I have into my toy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Thanks RM! I had never heard of him. Jeff, yes, but not Gary. I guess that he doesn't have a web site.

Actually, the way I found Gary Martin was by referral from Richard Good when I bought my triple intake. Richard recommended him. Gary lives in South Dakota and does a lot of concours restoration of different carbs for those lucky people that are doing true concours restorations on their cars. His prices are not "concours" though. In line with everyone else.
I had posted a pic sometime back of my trips right out of the box from Gary. They are and were still gorgeous. His gaskets are all the best quality. Pick up a regular Hemmings and look under carbs. I think you can Google his name and Hemmings together, it will pop up.

Bill

Thanks for all the comments. I think I have found some side curtain frames and I learned some new tricks for the better half.

as to Bluemiata09's question on the Toyota Conversion.. I havn't done it before but I have received a lot of real valuable input from PeterK as to the issues he ran into while installing his. I checked your site and think I had run across it before...

I went to Gary Martin on the recommendation of Bill.. Don't think I'll be sorry... Next week I'll post pictures and his number...

I second that! My father keeps asking me how much I've put into my 250 in the year I've owned it, and I tell him that I've never added it up, and I have no intention of *ever* doing so. I keep track of *what* I've done, but not how much it has cost. The receipts, by the way, are kept in an "undisclosed location." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
